Childbirth is a remarkable event that significantly alters a woman's life, with normal delivery being the most highly recommended method for bringing a baby into the world. However, the cesarean section has also become increasingly prevalent in contemporary practice. The rise in cesarean births has given rise to numerous myths surrounding the procedures associated with normal delivery.

By dispelling these misconceptions, women can approach the childbirth process with a more informed and realistic outlook, ultimately fostering a healthier and more empowering birthing experience. In a recent interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Mugdha Joshi, a Gynecologist at Manipal Hospital in Pune's Baner, addressed seven prevalent myths that many may still hold regarding normal deliveries.

Myth 1: Vaginal delivery can cause prolapse

Fact: It is commonly believed that giving birth naturally can result in the prolapse of the pelvic organ, which isn't true. There is a possibility that childbirth can increase the risk of prolapse; however, C sections are not an option to prevent this prolapse. Instead, it is a widespread misconception that natural childbirth leads to pelvic organ prolapse. While it is true that childbirth may elevate the risk of prolapse, opting for a cesarean section does not serve as a preventive measure against this condition. Rather, engaging in consistent pelvic floor exercises, such as Kegels, can enhance muscle strength and mitigate the risk of prolapse.lar pelvic floor exercises like Kegels can be done to increase muscle strength and reduce the risk.

Some of the best ways to ensure a normal delivery in such conditions is to exercise during pregnancy, and eat a healthy diet.

Myth 2: Forceps and vacuum deliveries are dangerous

It is a fact that the use of forceps or vacuum extraction during delivery may appear intimidating; however, when conducted by an experienced obstetrician, these procedures are considered safe. Such instruments are employed to assist in the delivery process under specific circumstances, such as extended labor or when the infant requires assistance in being born. It is crucial to understand that these techniques are intended to minimize risks for both the mother and the child, rather than to inflict harm.

Myth 3: Labour pain is intolerable

Many individuals hold the belief that labor pain is intolerable, a notion likely influenced by its depiction in television and film. However, the experience of labor pain varies among women, largely depending on their individual pain thresholds. Furthermore, advancements in medical science have introduced effective pain management strategies, such as epidurals and breathing techniques, which significantly enhance the manageability of a natural delivery. Numerous women discover an inner strength during labor that they were previously unaware of.

Myth 4: C-sections are less painful than vaginal birth

It is often claimed that a cesarean section is a more convenient alternative to vaginal delivery due to the administration of anesthesia to the expectant mother. Nevertheless, although the birthing process may not be significantly painful, the recovery phase following a C-section can be more uncomfortable and may require a longer duration than that of a vaginal delivery. Furthermore, the mobility and daily activities of a new mother may be limited for several weeks post-surgery.

Doctors say VBAC is possible after C-section.

Myth 5: Vaginal deliveries can cause sexual dysfunction

It is a prevalent misconception that vaginal deliveries lead to sexual dysfunction; however, there is no supporting evidence for this assertion. In reality, many women have reported an enhancement in their sexual experiences following childbirth.

Myths 6: Twins can't be delivered via vaginal birth

This statement is a misconception; it is not true that twins cannot be delivered naturally. In reality, a significant number of twin births occur through vaginal delivery. Approximately fifty per cent of all twin pregnancies are successfully delivered using natural methods.

Myth 7: Natural birth is riskier

Many individuals hold the belief that vaginal deliveries pose greater risks compared to cesarean sections. However, this notion is unfounded, as natural deliveries are typically associated with lower risks and a high success rate.

Adhering to misconceptions can increase potential risks; therefore, it is essential to comprehend the realities of childbirth in order to make well-informed choices. It is advisable to seek guidance from medical professionals and obstetricians prior to making any decisions concerning delivery methods.
