Seasonal Allergy Survival Tips for Children, Backed by Doctors

As the seasons shift, certain vulnerable demographics, particularly children, are at a heightened risk of illness. The transition from winter to summer, with a brief spring interlude, is characterized by rising temperatures, increased airborne dust and pollen, and heightened pollution levels, all of which can adversely affect children's health. It is essential for parents to implement appropriate strategies to safeguard their children's well-being.

Dr. Krishna Prasad, a Consultant Pediatrician at Motherhood Hospitals in Electronic City, Bangalore, outlined several important steps that parents should take to ensure that allergens and other health triggers do not jeopardize their children's health. As children embark on a new academic year, it is crucial for them to be in good health to maintain their concentration on their studies.

Dr. Prasad described the typical symptoms associated with seasonal allergies, stating, “Children who experience seasonal allergies may exhibit symptoms such as sneezing, runny or congested noses, coughing, nasal blockage, itchy eyes, and skin rashes. These symptoms often arise due to abrupt temperature changes, elevated pollen counts, or increased dust in the atmosphere.”

Below are some preventive measures recommended by Dr. Prasad to help mitigate seasonal allergies:

Maintain good hygiene

Teach your kids the right way to wash hands.

It can be challenging to restrict children from playing outdoors; therefore, parents should ensure that their children shower after engaging in outdoor activities and thoroughly wash their hands and feet before and after meals. It is also important for parents to discourage their children from rubbing their eyes, as this may lead to infections. Regular washing of bed linens, stuffed animals, and curtains is essential, along with frequent vacuuming of rugs and carpets to eliminate germs. To enhance indoor air quality, parents may consider utilizing air purifiers and dehumidifiers.

Regular monitoring of pollen levels

Pollen allergy is common in kids during springtime.

Parents ought to monitor pollen levels on a daily basis. By staying informed, they can allow their children to play outside only when pollen levels are at a minimum. Additionally, it is advisable for parents to keep doors and windows shut during periods of high pollen to minimize the risk of allergies entering the home.

Taking medications after consulting a doctor

Ask your doctor for medications like nasal spray.

Medications prescribed by physicians often differ among children depending on their specific conditions. While some children may have mild allergy symptoms, others may need more intensive treatment. Pediatricians generally recommend medications with appropriate dosages tailored to each child's needs. In cases where a child has difficulty breathing, doctors may suggest the use of nasal sprays. Additionally, eye drops are frequently prescribed to alleviate symptoms such as watery and red eyes. In certain situations, physicians may also advise allergy shots to help prevent chronic illnesses and potential future health issues.

Boost immune system with good diet and exercise

Children should be active daily to prevent sedentary lifestyle that further worsens immune system.

Parents have the option to seek guidance from a dietitian to create a customized diet plan for their child. It is essential for parents to incorporate a diet abundant in nutrients, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids, which includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, and fish. Children should aim for 9 to 10 hours of sleep each night, as adequate rest is crucial for stress reduction and strengthening the immune system. Additionally, parents can encourage their children to participate in physical activities such as exercise, yoga, swimming, and cycling, as these pursuits can enhance their energy levels and help them combat seasonal illnesses.
