Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a condition resulting from a bacterial infection in the urinary bladder, which can cause symptoms such as a burning sensation, painful urination, hematuria (blood in the urine), lower abdominal discomfort, chills, fever, and fatigue. While UTIs are frequently observed in women, there has been a concerning increase in their occurrence among men.

In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Gopal Ramdas Tak, a Consultant Urologist at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology in Hyderabad, stated, “UTIs can affect any segment of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. Although these infections are often associated with women, men are also at risk, and this risk is on the rise. In men, UTIs may be linked to complications such as prostate issues, kidney stones, or sexual activity.”

Dr. Tak also identified several factors contributing to the increasing prevalence of UTIs in men:

Poor hydration:

Many men, particularly those engaged in demanding occupations or living in fast-paced settings, frequently neglect the necessity of consuming sufficient water. Dehydration can result in concentrated urine, which irritates the bladder and promotes bacterial growth.

Stress:

Stress is another critical factor contributing to the heightened incidence of UTIs among men. Elevated stress levels can compromise the immune system, rendering individuals more vulnerable to infections.

Poor lifestyle, stress and lack of proper hygiene can lead to UTI in men.

Poor work-life balance:

Men, especially those in high-stress jobs, often prioritize work over their health, leading to difficulties in maintaining a balance between professional and personal life. This neglect can result in unhealthy eating patterns, insufficient sleep, and a weakened immune system, all of which heighten the risk of UTIs.

Lack of awareness about proper hygiene:

Inadequate cleaning of the genital area or delaying urination for extended periods can significantly increase the likelihood of developing a UTI.

The urologist elaborated on the strategies for preventing urinary tract infections, stating, "To prevent UTIs, it is essential to embrace a healthier lifestyle, maintain adequate hydration, manage stress effectively, and adhere to proper hygiene practices." Additionally, the physician advised men to be vigilant regarding their health and to identify early symptoms in order to seek prompt medical assistance.
