Retinol, a derivative of Vitamin A, is a vital component in skincare formulations known for its anti-aging properties. It is effective in alleviating acne, as well as minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. During the summer months, the combination of sweat and humidity can lead to skin inflammation, making it crucial to adopt a careful approach to summer skincare, particularly regarding the application of retinol.
In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Gulhima Arora, a senior consultant dermatologist at Mehektagul Dermaclinic in New Delhi, emphasized, “The safety of retinol use in summer is important to consider, as it can heighten skin sensitivity, resulting in redness, dryness, and peeling, especially when first introduced, applied to damp skin, or in the presence of existing skin inflammation, particularly during winter.”
Given that pre-existing inflammation may be exacerbated by retinol, it is advisable to start with small doses and monitor the skin's response. The dermatologist further recommended using retinol at night rather than during the day to minimize light exposure.

Safe practices to use retinol in summer:
- During the summer, the intensity of ultraviolet rays can increase the likelihood of skin irritation and may contribute to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It is crucial to emphasize the importance of applying sunscreen thoroughly and frequently throughout the day when using retinol.
- Begin with a lower concentration of retinol and limit its application to three to four times a week. Apply it to a dry face, using smaller amounts and gradually increasing the strength as your skin adjusts.
- To counteract the drying effects of retinol on the skin's natural oils (lipids), it is advisable to consume a diet rich in omega fatty acids and to use gentle cleansers in conjunction with retinol. This approach helps prevent irritation and supports the skin barrier.
- Additionally, wearing sun-protective clothing, hats, and carrying umbrellas while outdoors are effective strategies to shield against the harsh visible and UV rays of summer, allowing for a more comfortable experience with retinol during this season.
