The monsoon humidity and rain increase the risk of fungal and bacterial infections which can trigger many skin-related woes like rashes and skin allergies. Managing them can be hard since these skin issues may take time to heal. But the healing process can accelerate with the right combination of preventive measures and appropriate treatments.

Why do I get rashes in monsoon?

An increase in humidity can lead to fungal infections that appear as ring-like lesions on any body part. Fungal infection on the feet is very common. “The humidity also promotes bacterial infections in the form of impetigo, boils and furuncles. These may be of concern in young children, diabetics and the elderly who may have severe infections. Wet hair may also cause increased scalp itching and dandruff also known as seborrheic dermatitis," adds Bharadwaj.

How to deal with rashes during monsoon?

There are some ways in which you can manage and prevent rashes or other skin-related allergies during monsoon. Here are some measures you can take to deal with rashes during monsoon:

1. Maintain proper skin hygiene

It is very important to maintain proper skin hygiene during the monsoon season to prevent rashes. Make it a point to shower twice a day to get rid of sweat and dirt which can clog your pores and lead to infection. You can also use a mild, antibacterial soap to thoroughly cleanse your skin. Ensure that your skin has completely dried out after showering, especially in areas that are prone to moisture accumulation like underarms and toes, before you put on clothes.

2. Keep your skin dry

Humidity in the weather can itself leave your skin moist, making a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria. Use a soft towel to pat dry your skin post-bathing while being meticulous about skin folds. If you are drenched in the downpour, immediately take out those damp clothes and shoes, and change into dry clothing if you get wet. Wet skin has a higher chance of developing rashes.

3. Opt for the right fabrics

The humidity levels in the monsoon season are very high, so choose loose, breathable fabrics like a blend of cotton and linen that allow air to circulate while keeping your skin dry. Refrain from wearing synthetic fabrics which can trap moisture and heat. Rashes can also irritate the skin, so choosing light fabrics keeps the irritation away. Make it a habit to change your clothes regularly, especially if they become damp from rain or sweat.

4. Moisturize well

While we have highlighted the importance of keeping your skin dry during monsoon, it is also important to maintain its moisture balance to avoid over-dryness or irritation. Use a lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer that suits your skin type. The oily skin beauties can rely on gel-based moisturizer for its effectiveness. Make sure to check that your moisturizer is non-comedogenic to prevent clogged pores.

5. Keep your feet protected

Our feet are more prone to infections during monsoon due to high exposure to dirty water and prolonged dampness. We can get rashes anywhere on the body. Try switching to waterproof footwear and refrain from walking barefoot. Always dry your feet properly after washing and apply some powder between the toes to prevent sealing of moisture.

6. Feed yourself a healthy diet

A diet that is rich in all vital minerals and vitamins can help boost your skin’s health and immunity. Incorporate plenty of vegetables, fruits, and seeds into your diet to ward off the risk of getting skin issues like rashes. Drinking ample water is also crucial to keep your skin hydrated from within.

7. Do not scratch

When we get rashes, it irritates us, and we always feel the urge to itch that area. Scratching can aggravate rashes. If you are experiencing itching, apply a cold compress to the affected area or use a topical anti-itch cream. Trim down your nails and keep them clean to avoid additional damage caused by scratching.
