Amy Schumer has expressed her approval of the weight loss medication Mounjaro, following an unfavorable experience with Wegovy several years ago. In a video posted on Instagram on March 21, the American stand-up comedian and actress stated, “Three years ago, I tried Wegovy; I was vomiting; I couldn’t tolerate it... Mounjaro has been excellent for me... I wanted to be honest with you about my experience.”

Additionally, Eli Lilly has introduced the anti-obesity drug Mounjaro in India. In an interview with Lifestyle, Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker, a consultant bariatric and laparoscopic surgeon at the MetaHeal Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery Center in Mumbai, along with Dr. Rajiv Kovil, head of diabetology at Zandra Healthcare and co-founder of the Rang De Neela Initiative, discuss the mechanism of Mounjaro and its possible advantages and disadvantages.

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) represents a pioneering class of dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists, providing an innovative solution for weight loss and the management of diabetes. Initially created for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, it has demonstrated significant weight loss advantages, enabling individuals who are overweight and do not have diabetes to shed approximately 20–25 percent of their body weight, while those with diabetes can expect a reduction of about 15 percent, according to Dr. Rajiv Kovil.

What are the benefits of Mounjaro?

Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker states that research indicates Mounjaro can facilitate a weight reduction of approximately 15 to 20 percent of total body weight when administered at optimal doses. This weight loss is associated with improvements in obesity-related co-morbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, joint pain, sleep apnea, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Furthermore, it enhances overall mobility and quality of life. She also notes that Mounjaro may benefit patients who are not suitable candidates for bariatric surgery, offering them partial relief.

Dr. Rajiv Kovil emphasizes that one of Mounjaro’s significant benefits in India is its competitive pricing, particularly in light of the impending launch of its close competitor, Wegovy (semaglutide). The dual agonist mechanism of Mounjaro provides enhanced weight loss compared to current GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide, positioning it as a promising treatment option for both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals facing obesity challenges.

What are the potential side effects of Mounjaro?

The primary side effects are related to digestive complications. Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker states, “Commonly reported issues include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, indigestion, and abdominal pain. In some instances, this medication may cause low blood sugar levels. There is a slight risk of developing thyroid cancer with prolonged use, and it is not recommended for individuals with a family history of thyroid cancer or MEN type 2 syndrome. Additionally, there is a potential risk of gallstone formation and pancreatitis. Some patients have also reported vision changes.”

Dr. Rajiv Kovil highlights additional concerns, noting, “Although GLP-1 receptor agonists have been in use for over twenty years, Mounjaro, as a dual agonist, is a newer compound with limited long-term real-world evidence. Furthermore, unlike the convenient prefilled pens available for other GLP-1 treatments, Mounjaro is provided in vials, which may hinder patient convenience and adherence in India.”

Another significant issue is the absence of cardiovascular outcome data (CVOT) for tirzepatide. Dr. Rajiv Kovil remarks, “In contrast, semaglutide has shown positive cardiovascular effects in both diabetic and overweight individuals without diabetes. Additionally, the CVOT results for oral semaglutide, anticipated this weekend, could further impact clinical decision-making.”

He emphasizes that despite these drawbacks, Mounjaro signifies a substantial advancement in the treatment of obesity and diabetes, with its enhanced weight loss effectiveness making it a formidable option in the expanding anti-obesity market. Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker concurs that it is essential to evaluate the benefits and risks before initiating the medication, and this should always occur under medical supervision. If any side effects arise after beginning the treatment, it is crucial to consult your doctor promptly.

Availability and pricing of Mounjaro in India

Mounjaro was introduced in India in March 2025, and medical professionals indicate that it will soon be accessible at major pharmacies. According to the doctors, the anticipated monthly cost ranges from approximately ₹14,000 to ₹18,000, depending on the prescribed dosage.

Who can take Mounjaro?

Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker states that according to the latest guidelines, individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeding 27.5 Kg/m2 may qualify for Mounjaro. Additionally, those with a BMI over 25 Kg/m2 who are experiencing obesity-related health issues, such as diabetes, can be considered for eligibility under medical supervision. She emphasizes the significance of adhering to a healthy diet and lifestyle while undergoing treatment, noting that nutritional supplements, such as multivitamins, may be necessary in certain cases. Furthermore, she highlights the importance of monitoring for the development of gallstones.

How can Mounjaro help Indians specifically?

Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker states that visceral or central obesity is a predominant issue among Indians. Additionally, our nation exhibits a significantly high rate of type 2 diabetes. Genetic variations may lead to differences in treatment responses and side effects. Currently, our understanding is limited, but we anticipate a clearer picture shortly.
