Nutritionist Shares Tips: How Sustainable Eating Can Save the Earth and Your Well-being

Sustainable eating is all about choosing food that promotes long-term health, minimizes waste, and has a lower impact on the environment. This is crucial because over three billion people are facing malnutrition, and many of us consume diets that lack quality.

With the global population growing rapidly, we could see nearly 10 billion people on Earth by 2050. Therefore, when we think about sustainable food practices, our aim should be to ensure that this larger population has enough food to eat and can access high-quality, nutritious options.

The FAO states that sustainable diets should protect and respect biodiversity and ecosystems, be culturally appropriate, accessible, fair, and affordable, while also being nutritionally sufficient, safe, and healthy, all while making the best use of our natural and human resources.

Balancing your plate is more sustainable than counting calories and logging all the foods eaten every day. Eating should not become a chore.

In a chat with a lifestyle magazine, Prachi Chandra, the Lead Clinical Nutritionist at Sakra World Hospital in Bengaluru, shared some tips on how individuals can embrace sustainable eating in their everyday lives-

1) Focus on plant-based foods

Incorporating more fruits, vegetables, legumes (like beans and lentils), nuts, and whole grains into your diet is great for your health and the planet. Foods such as avocados, oats, blueberries, quinoa, all types of pulses, broccoli, tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, and sweet potatoes have low greenhouse gas emissions and a minimal carbon footprint, making them eco-friendly choices.

2) Choose seasonal, locally sourced, organic, and home-cooked meals

Opting for these foods helps lower your carbon footprint. Seasonal produce is often fresher, more nutritious, and budget-friendly. Plus, you can even grow your own food in a kitchen garden!

Practising mindful eating behaviours, choosing seasonal foods, staying physically active and being positive is the best way to maintain good health status

3) Meal Planning

Take the time to plan your meals ahead of time and purchase only what you need to help cut down on food waste.

4) Opt for Sustainable Animal Products

Choose meat, eggs, and fish that are sourced and produced with environmental care in mind.

5) Practice Mindful Eating and Moderation

This approach supports maintaining a healthy weight and minimizes the overall consumption of health-related resources.

6Avoid Food in Plastic Packaging

Plastic has seeped into our environment and diets. Bring a reusable bag when you shop, select unpackaged fruits and vegetables whenever you can, and use paper or reusable bags. Say no to straws and plastic bags, and skip the plastic utensils and extra napkins when ordering takeout.

7) When dining out, skip the buffet

Resist the urge to indulge in the tempting food displays outside restaurants and shops.

8) Go for smaller portions

If the servings are huge, consider sharing an appetizer or a meal with your partner or kids.

9) Take your leftovers home

You might even want to bring your own reusable container for convenience.
