Alcohol is harmful and negatively impacts health. This fact is widely recognized; however, in social contexts, many individuals find it difficult to abstain from drinking. In a video posted by Shilpa Arora, a registered nutritionist with an MSc in Nutrition and Dietetics and a PhD, on March 14, she discussed the benefits of her lifelong abstinence from alcohol, noting that it has contributed to her skin remaining healthy and her abdomen not expanding.
What happens when you drink alcohol?
Shilpa shared the video accompanied by the caption, “Alcohol is harmful and can remain in your system for as long as a WEEK! It hampers metabolism, disturbs gut health, and impacts your energy levels.”
The video opens with the nutritionist emphasizing that alcohol is not digested in the body; rather, it is absorbed directly. She stated, “The liver functions as a filtering factory. When alcohol reaches the liver, it halts all other processes to metabolize the alcohol. This toxic substance can negatively impact your body for up to a week.”
Shilpa further noted that nearly 90 per cent of individuals consume alcohol due to peer pressure in an attempt to appear trendy. “Regardless of whether you are 20 or 80 years old, consuming alcohol often leads to foolish behaviour,” she remarked.
Hack to avoid drinking alcohol
To steer clear of alcohol at social events, many individuals often resort to sugary mocktails, which can be counterproductive. A nutritionist has proposed a simple solution that not only helps you refrain from alcohol consumption but also aids in weight management.
She recommended filling a glass with water and adding a few dashes of bitters along with a slice of orange. “Carrying this at a gathering will prevent any unwanted inquiries. This is my strategy. It resembles a cocktail, promotes digestive health, and allows you to maintain control without the need for uncomfortable justifications. Give it a try and focus on your well-being,” she advised.
