Nourishing Your Skin: Foods and Drinks for Flaky Skin Relief

2 months ago | 5 Views

Optimal skin health originates from internal factors. While topical skincare products are crucial for external care, adequate nutrition is essential for healing and sustaining the skin's vitality by supplying the necessary nutrients. Issues such as dull, dry, and flaky skin are prevalent concerns, and numerous skincare products are available to address them. However, relying solely on these products may only address superficial symptoms. To effectively resolve these issues at their source, it is imperative to prioritize proper hydration and nutrition. A comprehensive approach that integrates both nutrition and skincare is essential for addressing any skin-related concerns.

Mohita Mascarenhas, a nutritionist, has shared valuable insights on managing dry, flaky skin through her Instagram profile.

Stay hydrated

Hydration is fundamental for achieving radiant and supple skin. Mohita emphasized that hydration should not be derived from coffee or tea. Many individuals tend to consume these popular beverages to satisfy their thirst, but she recommends increasing water intake instead.

Water is indispensable for effective hydration. Although beverages like coffee and tea are often favored in colder months for warmth, Mohita suggests choosing herbal teas as a healthier alternative.

Incorporate foods high in Vitamins A and C

She provided a list of foods abundant in Vitamins A and C:

  • Amla
  • Guava
  • Oranges
  • Leafy greens
  • Papaya
  • Carrots
  • Spinach
  • Sweet potato
  • Pumpkin

Additionally, the nutritionist highlighted foods containing healthy fats, such as:

  • Ghee
  • Olive oil
  • Walnuts
  • Almonds
  • Avocado
  • Chia
  • Coconut
  • Pumpkin seed

Adequate protein intake

The nutritionist cautioned against neglecting protein intake, which is vital for a balanced diet. She advised that individuals should aim for at least 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight.

What is the significance of protein in enhancing skin health?

In a previous interview with HT, Dr. Andrea Rachel Castelino explained that protein supports the skin's barrier and contributes to collagen production. She stated, “A well-balanced diet that includes protein-rich foods such as eggs, lean meats, and tofu promotes the development of a healthy skin barrier and facilitates collagen formation in our skin.”

Take Omega 3 supplement

Mohita recommended the use of an Omega-3 supplement for individuals who do not consume fatty fish. Fish is a primary natural source of Omega-3. For those who do not include fish in their diet, the supplement serves as an excellent alternative.

But what is the benefit of Omega 3 for skin health?

In a previous interview with HT, Dr. Govindarajan stated, “Fatty fish, such as salmon, along with plant-based sources like flax seeds, are abundant in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for maintaining skin health. These beneficial fats aid in reducing inflammation and enhancing the skin’s lipid barrier, thereby safeguarding against environmental irritants such as pollution and UV radiation. Additionally, Omega-3 fatty acids can assist in managing skin issues like acne and eczema.”

Skincare tips

Both nutrition and effective skincare are vital for achieving radiant skin, making a balanced approach necessary. In addition to dietary and supplement suggestions, Mohita provided two key skincare recommendations:

  • Use lukewarm water for cleansing your skin and hair instead of hot water, as hot water can deplete the skin of its natural oils, leading to increased dryness.
  • Shield your skin with a nourishing body oil or body butter.

It is important to note that skincare routines and dietary needs can differ significantly among individuals based on their unique skin conditions. Consulting with a dermatologist is essential to customize both diet and skincare practices to meet personal requirements, ensuring optimal results. Always consult a physician before starting any supplements. The dietary and skincare advice provided is intended for informational purposes only.
