New Study Reveals: You Can Be Overweight and Healthy by Focusing on This One Key Factor

For many years, discussions surrounding health have predominantly centred on weight loss; however, recent research indicates that physical fitness may play a more crucial role in promoting longevity than merely being thin. A thorough investigation has revealed that a lack of physical fitness significantly heightens the risk of premature death, irrespective of age or body mass index (BMI).

The significance of fitness over weight

The most extensive study of its kind, recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, examined data from nearly 400,000 individuals aged middle-aged and older across various countries. The findings showed that those who maintained good aerobic fitness had a considerably lower risk of early mortality, even if they were classified as obese, in comparison to individuals of normal weight who exhibited poor fitness levels.

“This indicates that prioritizing fitness is far more critical than focusing solely on weight,” stated Siddhartha Angadi, an Exercise Physiologist at the University of Virginia and the lead author of the study.

Is it possible to be overweight yet healthy?

The connection between weight and health has been a topic of ongoing debate; however, this new research offers compelling evidence that physical fitness can alleviate many of the health risks associated with obesity. While obesity is linked to an increased risk of serious health issues such as diabetes and heart disease, engaging in regular physical activity and achieving good aerobic fitness can help mitigate these risks.

A study conducted in 2021 revealed that initiating an exercise regimen can decrease the likelihood of premature death by approximately 30%, which is twice the advantage gained from weight loss through dieting alone.

The relationship between BMI, fitness, and longevity

To conduct a thorough investigation, Angadi's research team included both male and female participants from diverse countries and employed objective assessments of aerobic fitness, such as cardiovascular stress tests. Participants were categorized into two distinct groups:

  • The unfit, were in the lowest 20% of endurance for their respective age and gender.
  • The fit, who were in the highest 80%.

The results were remarkable, indicating that individuals with obesity who maintained a good level of aerobic fitness had about half the risk of premature death compared to those of normal weight with poor fitness levels. Conversely, unfit individuals—irrespective of their BMI—were found to have double or even triple the risk of early mortality when compared to their fit counterparts.

“From a statistical perspective, fitness significantly mitigated the risk of early death associated with obesity-related conditions,” Angadi remarked.

What is the required amount of exercise to achieve fitness?

Fortunately, enhancing fitness does not necessitate rigorous workout routines; even a modest improvement from the lowest 20% to the 21st percentile of fitness can considerably lower mortality risk. Angadi stated that “brisk walks” are sufficient to effectuate a positive change.

As per a study on Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases, running each day for just 5 to 10 minutes at a moderate pace, say 6.0 miles per hour, not only has a significant impact on longevity but may also reduced the risk of death from heart attack or stroke and other cardiovascular disease, lower the risk of developing cancer, lower the risk of developing neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. The study highlighted that runners in general have a 25%–40% reduced risk of premature mortality and live approximately 3 years longer than non-runners.

Engaging in moderate exercise—defined as any activity that allows for conversation but not singing, such as brisk walking—can enhance aerobic fitness. If there is uncertainty regarding your fitness level, undergoing a stress test at a medical facility or physiology laboratory can offer valuable information.

Prioritize fitness over weight

John Thyfault, a professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center, highlighted that fitness plays a more significant role in determining longevity than body weight. “While individuals may have various motivations for wanting to lose weight, it is important to recognize that they can improve their health at their current weight simply by increasing their physical activity.”

Therefore, rather than concentrating on the number displayed on the scale, it is advisable to emphasize movement and physical activity. The evidence is unequivocal: achieving aerobic fitness is essential for a longer and healthier life.
