Exercise tips

Exercise is essential as it enhances and develops muscle in critical areas of the body, including the heart and bones. Consequently, experts advise engaging in physical activity every week. However, what is the appropriate amount of exercise required each week?

In a 2024 interview with Lifestyle, Dr Sreekanth Shetty, the director and head of the cardiology department at Sakra World Hospital in Bengaluru, stated, “Alongside two sessions of strength training, general recommendations indicate that individuals should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise each week. While walking contributes positively to cardiovascular health, it does not significantly enhance muscle strength. Therefore, for those who claim to walk 10,000 steps each day, it is important to note that this primarily benefits heart health rather than muscular development.”

Cardio health benefits

Dr Sreekanth recommended that for effective weight loss, individuals should strive for four to five sessions of moderate-intensity cardiovascular exercise each week. However, if the primary goal is overall health, engaging in cardio three times a week may be adequate. Cardiovascular activities are beneficial for improving heart health, increasing endurance, and facilitating calorie expenditure. It is advisable to incorporate exercises such as walking, running, cycling, or swimming into one's routine three to five times weekly.
