Narendra Modi Shares His Health Regimen: Fasting, Hydration, and Fruits

At the age of 74, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains remarkable for his vitality and robust health. A significant factor contributing to this is his disciplined fasting regimen, which he has adhered to for more than five decades. During an open discussion with Lex Fridman, a US-based podcaster and AI researcher, Modi revealed details about his fasting practices and their influence on his way of life.
PM Modi's fasting routine
PM Modi revealed that he observes the ancient Indian custom of Chaturmas, a fasting period lasting four months from mid-June until after Diwali. He stated, "During this time, I consume only one meal every 24 hours," elaborating on how digestion typically slows during the monsoon season, which makes this practice advantageous.
Modi discussed his fasting practices during Navratri, during which he completely refrains from food and consumes only hot water for a duration of nine days. "Incorporating hot water into my daily regimen has always been essential, and my lifestyle has gradually adjusted to this practice," he noted.
Furthermore, he observes Chaitra Navratri fasting in March or April, during which he consumes only one type of fruit each day for nine days. "For instance, if I select papaya, I will exclusively eat papaya for the entire nine days," he clarified. Modi reflected on how fasting has been a significant tradition in his life for more than fifty years.
Benefits of fasting
Discussing the advantages of fasting, Prime Minister Modi remarked, "You might have observed that during fasting, your senses such as smell, touch, and taste become significantly more acute." He continued, "To me, fasting represents a practice of self-discipline and an expression of devotion. It does not hinder my performance; rather, it enhances my sharpness."
Countering the prevalent notion that fasting diminishes physical strength, Modi views it as a means to rejuvenate both the mind and spirit. He clarified that fasting transcends merely abstaining from food; it involves restoring balance within the body, fortifying willpower, and attaining inner peace.
