Moong dal is a type of legume commonly used in Indian and Southeast Asian cuisines. Here are its types, according to nutritionist Ramya B:

  • Whole moong (green gram): These are small, green beans with the husk or skin intact. They are often used in salads, soups, and for sprouting.
  • Split moong (split green gram): These are green split beans with the husk intact. They are used in dishes like dals and soups.
  • Split moong (yellow moong dal): They are obtained by removing the green husk Commonly used in dal, khichdi, and various Indian sweets.

Green gram is considered to be healthier, as it has more fiber and nutrients due to the presence of the husk, says the expert. About a hundred grams of green has 16.3 grams of fiber, 23.9 grams of protein, 4.8 mg of vitamin C, 2.25 mg of niacin, 1250 mg of potassium, 132 mg of calcium, and 6.74 mg of iron, according to the US Department of Agriculture. On the other hand, a hundred grams of yellow split moong dal has 9.8 grams of fiber, 39 mg of calcium, 3.53 mg of iron, and 25.5 grams of protein, as per the USDA.
