Marriage and Weight Gain: New Study Reveals Shocking Connections
2 days ago | 5 Views
Are you stuck with those extra pounds? It might sound strange, but it could actually be the case. A recent study from the National Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw, Poland, suggests there’s a connection between marriage and weight gain. The researchers found that tying the knot can lead to weight issues, but the effects differ for men and women.
Study Results:
The research involved looking at data from 2,405 individuals, roughly split between men and women, with an average age of 50. Among these participants, 35.3% were of normal weight, 38.3% were classified as overweight, and 26.4% were considered obese.
Interestingly, the findings revealed that marriage can increase the likelihood of obesity in men by three times, while their chances of being overweight rise by 62%. On the other hand, women don’t face an increased risk of obesity after marriage, but their chances of being overweight do go up by 39%.

A study featured in the journal Economics & Human Biology looked into how marriage affects the body mass index (BMI) of men during the first five years of their marriage.
The researchers noted that as marriage progresses, men often tend to eat more and exercise less. This trend has been previously referred to as "happy fat," where weight gain is linked to being in a close relationship, resulting in additional weight. The study highlighted a noticeable difference in BMI between married and single men.
Interestingly, while weight gain is closely tied to marriage, the authors found that both men and women generally gain more weight with each passing year of marriage. They stated, “Age and marital status significantly influence the likelihood of being overweight or obese in adulthood, regardless of gender.” Ongoing research aims to delve deeper into the social, psychological, and environmental factors that contribute to weight gain, particularly in women compared to men.
