A cesarean section is a significant surgical procedure and necessitates considerable time for the body to recuperate from the pain. Throughout the recovery phase, women may encounter various forms of pain and discomfort as well. Nevertheless, with appropriate measures, postpartum pain can be controlled. In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Manjusha Goel, lead consultant in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi provided insights on managing postpartum pain following a C-section.

1. Incision pain:

The most immediate discomfort experienced after a C-section generally arises from the incision area. Pain relievers, antibiotics, and antacids are commonly prescribed after surgery and during the first several days post-discharge. These medications assist in managing pain, preventing infection, and promoting overall healing. It is crucial to maintain the incision site in a clean and dry manner while monitoring for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, or discharge.

2. Uterine contractions:

As the uterus starts to contract back to its size prior to pregnancy, women frequently feel cramping akin to menstrual discomfort. These afterpains can be quite unpleasant but are a natural aspect of postpartum recovery. Pain relievers may be taken if the discomfort intensifies.

After a C-section surgery, women may experience different types of pain and discomfort.3. Abdominal discomfort and gas:

After a C-section, gas, bloating, and irregular bowel movements are frequent due to the impact of anesthesia and the surgical procedure. To alleviate this discomfort, it can be beneficial to walk and remain hydrated. Stool softeners might also be recommended to avoid constipation and lessen the strain during bowel movements.

4. Back pain:

Changes in posture, weakened abdominal muscles, and the presence of scar tissue can contribute to back pain following surgery. A postpartum support belt can offer relief by providing gentle compression and support. Light core and pelvic floor exercises, once authorized by a doctor, can help strengthen the muscles and enhance posture.

5. Breast discomfort:

Sore breasts can result from breastfeeding, particularly in the initial days. Using warm compresses or taking warm showers before nursing and applying cold compresses between feedings can assist in relieving the pain and swelling.

When to seek help:

Although some discomfort is normal, persistent or intense pain that does not improve with medication or interferes with daily activities should be addressed with a healthcare provider. Recovery from a C-section usually takes around 6–8 weeks, and effective pain management is essential for a smoother postpartum experience.
