Love Poha? Here’s Why It May Not Be as Healthy as You Thought

Starting your day with a meal that is more nutritious than just a slice of buttered toast or a cup of coffee is advisable. But is poha a suitable breakfast option? While it is quick, simple, and satisfying (and quite delicious), Ameera Shah, the executive chairperson and director of Metropolis Healthcare, argues that "poha is not healthy." In a March 18 episode of Figuring Out With Raj Shamani, she discussed the less healthy characteristics of poha.

'Poha is pure rice, hence pure sugar'

Although poha is a gluten-free choice, as it is composed of rice flakes, it may lead to an increase in blood sugar levels. Ameera remarked, “Poha is often regarded as a very nutritious breakfast in India, but I have never grasped that concept. It consists entirely of rice flakes; how can poha be considered healthy? It is simply rice, which is predominantly carbohydrates. When carbohydrates are metabolized in the body, they convert into sugar.”

She further explained, “When you consume poha for breakfast, followed by rice dal for lunch, and then a samosa or vada pav in the evening, and again rice or pasta for dinner, you are primarily consuming carbohydrates. This continuous intake of carbs can lead to persistent spikes in your blood sugar levels, which can ultimately be detrimental to your health.”

Tips for a healthier poha breakfast

If you are unable to forgo poha, consider transforming it into a healthier breakfast choice by using nutritious ingredients, cooking it with minimal oil, and serving it with nutrient-rich sides. This approach is exemplified by Shehnaaz Gill, a contestant from Bigg Boss 13 and an actress, who expressed her fondness for poha in a January 25, 2025 interview with Times Foodie.

Shehnaaz mentioned that she begins her day with a protein-rich breakfast that features options such as vegetable-packed poha. She stated, “My poha recipe is somewhat unique as I incorporate more vegetables than poha. In addition to poha, I also enjoy granola and curd.”
