Lost Weight but Belly Fat Persists? Nutritionist Explains 5 Common Causes

Are you feeling puzzled about losing weight but not seeing a change in your belly? This is a common issue for many; even when people shed pounds elsewhere, they often struggle to lose belly fat.

On April 20, Nutritionist Amaka took to her Instagram to tackle this topic, stating, “You’ve dropped a significant amount of weight, but your belly fat seems to be sticking around?” She went on to explain five reasons why this might be happening:

Elevated cortisol levels:

When you're constantly stressed, your body releases a hormone known as cortisol, which tends to store fat, particularly in your abdominal area. This means that even if you're eating less, stress can prevent your belly from shrinking.

No strength or core workouts:

If you're just focusing on cardio without incorporating weightlifting or core exercises, your muscles won't get stronger. You may shed some pounds, but your stomach will remain soft and noticeable since you're not working on toning that area.

Excessive cheat days:

Frequent cheat meals can really hinder your progress. You might believe it's just an occasional treat, but regularly indulging in high-calorie foods can result in weight gain, particularly around your midsection. It's important to recognize when to draw the line and control those cravings before they take over.

Lack of sleep or insufficient rest:

Lack of quality sleep can throw your hormones out of balance, increase your cravings, and slow down your metabolism. This can result in stubborn belly fat, even if you're putting in a lot of effort.

You're a bit restless:

Belly fat often hangs around longer than other types of fat, and a lot of folks throw in the towel too quickly. You might be on the right track, but if you quit too soon, you won't see the changes you want. Shedding belly fat requires time, dedication, and a bit of patience, so just stick with it!
