Liver Cancer Isn’t Just for Later Life — Your Diet Might Be to Blame

Liver cancer is quickly becoming a significant health issue, especially in South India, where diseases linked to lifestyle such as diabetes, obesity, and fatty liver are causing a rapid rise in cases. Elevated alcohol intake and shifting eating patterns have additionally exacerbated this increase, rendering liver cancer a growing peril.

Experts raise concern about India's hidden epidemic

Dr. Praveen Kesav, Senior Consultant and Head of Division - Interventional Radiology at Gokulam Hospital in Trivandrum, remarked, “What is particularly troubling is that fatty liver disease, previously observed in older individuals, is now being identified in children as young as five or six. If immediate action isn’t taken, we may soon witness liver cancer impacting individuals in their twenties or thirties, making early transplants a stark reality. ”

He disclosed, “Even though liver cancer is among the most lethal cancers due to late detection, it is frequently preventable. Consistent screening, healthy lifestyle habits, and innovations in minimally invasive procedures like ablation and Balloon TACE provide optimism in addressing this escalating epidemic. ”

Experts connect diet to liver cancer increase

Sharing his expertise on the matter, Dr. Jignesh Reddy, Consultant Interventional Radiologist at AIG Hospital in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, warned, “We’re witnessing a concerning upsurge in liver cancer, particularly among younger individuals, and much of it relates to lifestyle. Processed foods have become embedded in our diets since childhood, gradually changing liver function in ways we may not always recognize. In South India, elements such as high consumption of processed rice, a humid climate, and diets rich in fructose could be exacerbating metabolic liver diseases more than in North India, where wheat and millet are more prevalent. ”

He summarized, “With ailments such as diabetes and hypertension becoming more significant, fatty liver disease is now identified as Metabolic Associated Liver Disease (MASH). Emphasis should truly be placed on prevention, increasing awareness, making healthier decisions, and identifying problems early. Although surgery or transplant provides the highest possibility of a cure, only a limited number of patients meet the criteria, which is why early intervention is crucial. ”
