Let Go of Guilt: Why Regaining Weight Doesn’t Mean You’ve Failed in Your Fitness Journey

If you've ever faced challenges with losing weight, the anxiety of putting those pounds back on can be really tough. However, new research from the University of Gothenburg indicates that even if you do gain some weight back, the health advantages you gained from your initial weight loss might still remain, providing lasting protection against serious illnesses.
Understanding the science of weight regain and its impact on health
Published in The Lancet Region Health—Europe, this study explored a frequently ignored topic: What happens to your health when you put some of the weight back on after losing it? While there's a lot of information about the advantages of losing weight, the long-term impacts of regaining weight have not been well understood until now.
The research involved 1,346 participants from the Swedish Obese Subjects (SOS) study, a comprehensive project focused on the long-term health implications of bariatric (weight-loss) surgery. The researchers examined important health factors, such as life expectancy, cancer risk, cardiovascular issues, and microvascular disease, which affects the smallest blood vessels in the body. They also collected additional health information from Sweden’s national health registries.
Unexpected discoveries
Typically, participants shed around 30 kilograms (66 pounds) in the year following their surgery. Yet, by the four-year mark after the procedure, more than half of them had put back on at least 20% of the weight they had lost.
The researchers split the participants into two categories: those who kept off the weight and those who had put a significant amount back on. Interestingly, even with the weight regain, the study showed no difference in life expectancy or cancer risk between the two groups.
The rates of cancer occurrence and death were consistent, regardless of whether participants held onto their weight loss or gained some back. However, the study did uncover some variations in other health outcomes:
- People who regained weight faced a greater risk of microvascular disease, showing an incidence rate of 11.0 per 1,000 person-years, while those who maintained their weight loss had a lower rate of 8.7 per 1,000.
- Similarly, the risk of cardiovascular disease was somewhat higher for those who put weight back on, with an incidence rate of 15.7 per 1,000 person-years, compared to 13.0 per 1,000 for individuals who successfully kept the weight off.
Regaining weight isn't a setback; it's just a part of the process
Dr. Kajsa Sjöholm, one of the main researchers behind the study, highlighted how significant this discovery is. She pointed out, “Up until now, we didn’t really understand how regaining weight after a significant weight loss impacts long-term health and mortality. What we’re finding is that even individuals who put some weight back on still enjoy lasting positive effects and have a life expectancy similar to those who keep their weight off.”
Keeping off the weight you’ve lost is great, but this study found that the early perks of shedding pounds—like better metabolic health—don’t entirely disappear if you gain a little back. Still, Dr. Sjöholm pointed out that gaining a lot of weight again can be risky, especially for your heart and overall well-being. Plus, problems like joint pain and the social stigma surrounding obesity can also create hurdles.
What does this imply for you?
If you've shed some pounds and then put a few back on, don't stress. Your hard work has still made a positive difference for your health. This study also pointed out how crucial it is to have ongoing support for anyone who has experienced significant weight loss.
Whether it's through lifestyle changes, medical advice, or community encouragement, keeping your weight stable over the long haul can help reduce health risks. Remember, weight management isn't about being perfect—it's about making progress. So, if you've lost weight in the past and regained a bit, take a moment to breathe and remind yourself that every step towards better health matters.
