"Lessons from a 54 kg Weight Loss Journey": Avoiding Common Mistakes with PCOS

Struggling to drop those extra pounds? You're definitely not the only one! A lot of folks find it tough to lose weight, especially with conditions like PCOS that can complicate things. Heather, a PCOS weight loss coach who managed to shed 54 kgs, often shares her journey on Instagram. In her latest update, she talks about the common pitfalls people encounter when trying to lose weight with PCOS and what to steer clear of for better success.

"I navigated through my own 'mistakes' to discover what worked for me… and I ended up losing 90lbs in a year! I hope that by sharing my story, I can help you figure out what works for you and your PCOS," Heather mentioned in her post.

Here’s a different take on that: Common pitfalls to steer clear of while trying to lose weight with PCOS

Heather opened up about her experience dealing with PCOS and the missteps she encountered. “I thought I was all in on being gluten and dairy-free. I picked up this premier protein shake because I heard protein was great for PCOS. I figured there wouldn’t be any milk in it since it wasn’t in the refrigerated section. I mean, how could something dry have milk, right? But the weight wasn’t budging, and I wasn’t feeling any improvement.”

She mentioned, “Honestly, I was feeling even worse because I was adding more dairy to my meals, which just made my mucus and stomach issues worse. It was such a nightmare. My self-esteem was in the gutter because I had a history of crash dieting; even eating just 1,200 calories made me gain weight, and I really thought there was something wrong with me.”

Heather also confessed that, despite her intentions, she wasn't as gluten- and dairy-free as she thought. She looked back on her choices and recognized how they had unintentionally held her back. "People like to call me crazy for believing I could gain weight on 1,200 calories. But honestly, this is the one time I’d say I was a bit out of touch—I thought I was 80-90% gluten- and dairy-free, but I was really only around 50-60%. My so-called 'healthy' salads had gluten-filled chips and dairy cheese. Plus, I was all about cardio with lighter weights, not realizing that lifting heavier would have been way better for my insulin resistance."

Aerobics or strength training?

Her challenges went beyond just her diet. At first, she focused on cardio workouts, believing they were the best way to go, but later discovered that weight training with heavier weights would have been a smarter choice for tackling insulin resistance, which is a common problem for people with PCOS. She also encountered some physical hurdles when trying to exercise outside. "I really wish I had known about my vibration plate earlier because walking outdoors was super tiring for me. My joints felt overheated, and it was tough on my asthma, so I ended up skipping it altogether."

Even with these obstacles, Heather still managed to shed 35 pounds in six months and finally got pregnant with her son after years of trying. “After so long, even with my missteps, 18 months postpartum, I went completely gluten and dairy-free. I also incorporated a few other things into my PCOS routine that I share on this page. Be sure to follow your PCOS big sister, because I’m no longer dealing with all those symptoms, and I want you to find the same relief for yourself.”
