Karishma Mehta, the CEO of Humans of Bombay, recently opened up about her choice to freeze her eggs. In an Instagram post, she revealed that she went through the process in January 2025. This move reflects a growing trend among women who are opting for egg freezing as a way to empower their reproductive choices.
By freezing her eggs, Karishma is taking charge of her fertility, which allows her to keep her options open for the future and eases the pressure to rush into settling down or starting a family. Her story contributes to the ongoing dialogue about egg freezing, fertility, and women's rights over their reproductive health.
Previously, actress Priyanka Chopra also shared her experience of freezing her eggs in her early 30s. Before diving into the details of egg freezing, including its costs and risks, let’s see what Karishma had to say.
'I had my eggs frozen at the start of the month'
She shared a snippet of her latest Instagram caption that said, “It’s the first month of the year, and my portfolio is looking pretty diverse! I’ve had some personal victories and professional achievements. I’ve checked off a few bucket list items and set the stage for more. 2025 is off to a great start, everyone! I’ve been wanting to do this for a while, and I finally made it happen. I froze my eggs at the start of the month.”

All the essentials about freezing your eggs
Egg freezing is a method for preserving fertility, but it doesn't guarantee that you'll be able to conceive later on. It's really important to talk to a fertility expert to go over your specific situation and figure out the best steps to take.
So, what exactly is egg freezing? It's a reproductive process where a woman takes medication to stimulate her ovaries to produce more eggs. These eggs are then collected, frozen, and stored for future use.
In a recent chat with a lifestyle magazine, Dr. Swati Mishra, an IVF specialist at Birla Fertility and IVF in Kolkata, explained, “Egg freezing, or oocyte cryopreservation, is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) that involves extracting, freezing, and storing a woman’s eggs to help her maintain her ability to have children later on. This technique not only allows women to save their own eggs for future use but also supports egg donation, where another woman’s eggs are used for conception. Since women are born with a limited number of eggs, which start to decline in quality and quantity in their late 30s, egg freezing is a great way to keep those eggs in good shape for later.”
In a 2023 interview with Hindustan Times, Dr. Rahul Manchanda, a senior consultant in endoscopic gynecology at PSRI Hospital in Delhi, mentioned, “This process gives women the chance to safeguard their fertility for the future, which is why it’s becoming increasingly popular in India.”
The best age to consider freezing your eggs
The egg freezing process usually takes about 10 to 14 days, and women will need to undergo some tests to check the health and condition of their eggs. For women in their late 30s or older, the chances of success with frozen eggs might be lower.
Dr. Archna Dhawan Bajaj, a gynaecologist at Nurture IVF, mentioned in a 2023 interview with an online media that women with certain medical issues, like repeated ovarian hyperstimulation, can't go through the hormonal treatment needed for egg retrieval. Generally, egg freezing is suggested for women aged 30 to 35, or just over 35, who aren't quite ready for pregnancy but want to keep that option open for the future.

Potential downsides of freezing eggs
Some women might feel really weak before egg freezing, which usually involves hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries and produce several eggs for collection. Dr. Ritu Sethi, a senior consultant in gynecology at Cloud Nine Hospital in Gurgaon, mentioned in a 2023 interview with an online media that feeling weak or fatigued after egg freezing isn’t typical. It usually occurs in those with a compromised immune system. While some women might experience mild discomfort or tiredness post-procedure, severe weakness that could be life-threatening is quite rare.
She also pointed out that everyone reacts differently to medical procedures, and factors like overall health, medical history, and the specifics of the egg freezing process can influence how someone feels afterward. It’s advised to follow the same guidelines as mentioned earlier. Additionally, even with advancements in reproductive technology that may enhance egg-freezing success rates, there’s no guarantee of a successful pregnancy with frozen eggs.
The price of freezing eggs in India
The whole process usually takes about two to three weeks, and you can expect to pay anywhere from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000. You can keep eggs stored for as long as 50 years, with storage fees ranging from ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 each year.
