There are additional circumstances in which the common practice of applying kajal may contribute to the development of dark circles. In an Instagram video, Dr. Gurveen Waraich, MBBS, MD, discussed the situations in which the use of kajal could result in dark circles, captioning the video, “Can Kajal cause dark circles?”

According to the dermatologist, a fundamental principle regarding makeup is that its application is not inherently problematic; rather, the failure to remove it adequately can result in various complications. This principle applies equally to kajal. Dr. Gurveen elaborates on three specific scenarios where there is a slight possibility that kajal could contribute to dark circles.

1. Incomplete removal of makeup can lead to the formation of dark circles beneath the eyes.

2. Dr. Gurveen notes that if you frequently rub your eyes, you may inadvertently push the kajal into the upper layers of your skin.

3. The dermatologist also points out that individuals with peri-orbital eczema or dermatitis—a common skin condition characterized by inflammation of the eyelids and surrounding skin—may find that using kajal exacerbates dark circles. “Firstly, makeup can worsen the condition. Secondly, the skin barrier around the eyes is already compromised due to eczema, making it easier for kajal to penetrate the superficial skin layers, resulting in dark circles,” Dr. Gurveen explained.

It is well understood that the skin surrounding the eyes is thinner than that of the rest of the face. Therefore, it is essential to care for the under-eye area using gentle products.
