Ovarian cancer ranks among the most prevalent cancers affecting women. It originates in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or the peritoneal lining, and may result in symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, vaginal bleeding, increased frequency of urination, and changes in appetite. Due to the nonspecific nature of these symptoms, individuals may delay seeking medical attention, potentially leading to more severe complications. Dr. Sampada Dessai, a consultant in gynecological cancer at P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC in Mahim, referred to ovarian cancer as the "silent killer" during an interview with HT Lifestyle.

Is missed period a symptom of ovarian cancer?

“With heightened awareness surrounding ovarian cancer, many women question whether a missed period could signify a more serious condition, such as cancer. Although a missed period is seldom a direct symptom of ovarian cancer, it is crucial to regard it seriously and consult a healthcare professional to ascertain its underlying cause,” Dr. Sampada Dessai noted.

The physician elaborated that ovarian cancer encompasses a variety of cancers that arise in the ovaries, categorized into three main types:

Epithelial ovarian cancer: This is the most prevalent form, primarily affecting postmenopausal women, particularly those over the age of 50.

Germ cell cancer: This type is more commonly found in younger women, typically in their 20s and 30s.

Sex cord stromal cancer: These are hormone-secreting tumors that can develop at any age.

Ovarian cancer develops in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or lining of the abdomen.

Dr. Dessai further explained, “Among these types, epithelial ovarian cancer is the most common and generally presents with symptoms such as bloating, abdominal swelling, difficulty in eating, a feeling of fullness, and frequent urination. In rare instances, it may also lead to menstrual irregularities, including abnormal bleeding or spotting.”

A missed period is a coincidental symptom:

"A missed menstrual cycle is infrequently linked to ovarian cancer, especially epithelial ovarian cancer. It is more probable that it serves as an incidental symptom rather than a definitive sign of cancer. Nonetheless, sex cord stromal tumors, which produce hormones, may result in hormonal imbalances and menstrual irregularities, including missed cycles. These tumors can affect women across various age groups and may be associated with unusual bleeding patterns or other menstrual disturbances," Dr. Sampada Dessai clarified.
