If you find it difficult to envision beginning your day without a robust cup of coffee, it may be time to reevaluate your morning habits. In our fast-paced society, coffee has become the preferred source of energy for many, providing a quick boost to navigate hectic mornings. Although it offers comfort and stimulation, consuming coffee on an empty stomach may not be the healthiest choice for everyone.

Negative health impacts of coffee

"Coffee consumption can have negative effects on health and metabolism. It increases the production of stomach acid, which may irritate the stomach lining and lead to digestive problems, particularly acid reflux," explains Dr. Archana Batra, a dietitian and certified diabetes educator, in a recent interview.

Doctor advises against drinking coffee first thing in the morning, as it may heighten stress and disrupt metabolism.

She elaborated, "Caffeine elevates cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone that tends to be naturally elevated in the morning." Elevated cortisol levels can result in various symptoms, including weight gain, acne, hypertension, muscle weakness, and fatigue. "However, consistently high cortisol production may signal an underlying health issue," she noted.

Dr. Batra also emphasised that consuming caffeine right after waking may increase stress and anxiety for some people. "Prolonged elevated cortisol levels can adversely impact nearly all bodily functions," she stated.

The relationship with cortisol

"Cortisol is a steroid hormone that governs numerous processes in the body, such as metabolism and immune response. It is integral to our natural energy cycle," Dr. Archana explains. Typically, cortisol levels peak between 6 and 10 a.m., and drinking coffee during this period can disrupt the body's natural rhythm.

Optimal timing for coffee consumption

Dr. Batra recommends, "The best time to enjoy coffee is 1.5 to 2 hours after waking. This timing provides a more balanced energy boost without disrupting your body's natural cycle." For those who prefer an early coffee, she advises having a light meal or snack to help prevent potential digestive discomfort.

She further mentioned, "Coffee is abundant in antioxidants and offers numerous health benefits, such as enhanced brain function and metabolism. While drinking coffee is not inherently harmful, the timing and manner of consumption are essential. Adjusting when you drink coffee could enhance its benefits for you."
