Is Your Daily Butter Intake Increasing Death Risk? Shocking Study Findings Revealed
8 days ago | 5 Views
Butter is a highly coveted ingredient in numerous culinary creations. A small amount of butter enhances the flavour of various dishes, whether it be on toasted bread or incorporated into a curry, imparting a delightful freshness. However, a recent study conducted by Yu Zhang at Mass General Brigham suggests that the benefits of butter may be outweighed by potential health risks, indicating that its consumption could adversely affect longevity.
Findings of the study:
The research involved monitoring over 220,000 Americans over 33 years. Findings indicated that the intake of butter may elevate the risk of premature death by 15 percent. A comparison was made between butter and plant-based oils, revealing a clear advantage for the latter in terms of longevity. While butter appears to shorten lifespan, the use of plant-based oils is associated with a 17 per cent reduction in mortality risk.
The researchers noted, “It is well established that substituting saturated fatty acids with unsaturated fatty acids and eliminating trans fatty acids confers substantial health benefits, particularly in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Butter has been traditionally linked to adverse health outcomes, especially cardiovascular risk; however, recent studies have produced mixed results regarding the relationship between butter consumption and mortality.”

Butter vs. plant-based oils:
The research examined data from three significant studies: the Nurses’ Health Study, Nurses’ Health Study II, and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. It focused on the consumption levels of butter and plant-based oils among the participants. Surveys were conducted every four years to assess long-term dietary habits.
Throughout the study period, there were 51,000 recorded deaths, which included approximately 12,200 attributed to cancer and 11,200 to heart disease. After considering various mortality factors such as age, body weight, physical activity, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, and overall dietary quality, a discernible pattern emerged. The researchers determined that higher butter intake is associated with an elevated risk of premature death, whereas plant-based oils were found to be relatively benign.
