Dr. Priyanka Rani stated, “Stress is linked to irregular menstrual cycles, increased flow, and even painful menstruation. A typical menstrual cycle lasts between 25 to 35 days. Cycles occurring before 25 days or after 35 days are considered abnormal. Elevated stress levels can lead to both shorter and longer menstrual cycles.”
Responses to stress vary among individuals, and there is no definitive way to quantify its effects on the body. Dr. Priyanka Rani elaborated, “Stress elevates cortisol levels in the body, resulting in hormonal imbalances. The menstrual cycle is regulated by the consistent development of the follicle or egg. The hypothalamus in the brain releases specific chemicals, and excessive stress disrupts this balance, leading to irregular periods. Research has also indicated that stress may cause the body to postpone or completely inhibit ovulation.”
Regarding age demographics among women, Dr. Priyanka Rani noted, “Many young women, particularly those in couples with late-night work schedules, experience stress. This adversely affects their sleep patterns, reduces physical activity, and alters their dietary habits. I frequently observe irregular periods in women aged 25 to 35.”

- Practicing yoga and pranayama can be beneficial in managing stress, particularly for couples undergoing infertility treatments.
- Maintaining a supportive social network can facilitate emotional expression and help navigate the feelings you may be experiencing.
When should one consult a physician?
Dr. Priyanka Rani stated, “If there is a noticeable change in your menstrual cycle over three to four months, it is crucial to seek medical advice. Additionally, if menstruation has not occurred for 3-4 months and the pregnancy test is negative, consulting a doctor is essential. Symptoms such as poor appetite, insomnia, mood swings, and a diminished interest in social activities may indicate mental fatigue and stress, warranting professional guidance.”
She concluded with the recommendation, “Couples facing stressful circumstances and challenges in conception should consider consulting a fertility specialist. Even for those not currently planning a pregnancy, irregular menstrual cycles can pose significant issues in the future.”
