Numerous skincare trends circulate on the Internet, often leading to confusion among individuals. A recent trend that has gained attention suggests submerging one's face in ice water immediately upon waking. Proponents claim that this practice can diminish puffiness, tighten the skin, and impart a natural radiance. But is there any validity to these assertions?
In a discussion with, Dr. Suby Kakkar, a dermatologist at Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, he stated, “When the face is exposed to ice-cold water, the blood vessels in the skin constrict. This can help alleviate puffiness, minimize the appearance of pores, and create a firmer look. As the skin warms up again, blood circulation increases, resulting in a fresh and glowing complexion. This is why many individuals adopt this technique in the morning to invigorate their skin and reduce under-eye swelling.”
Advantages of immersing the face in ice water include:
“Ice water can offer immediate benefits for the skin. It effectively reduces puffiness, particularly around the eyes, and can enhance skin firmness. The cold temperature also boosts blood circulation, contributing to a vibrant and healthy appearance. Additionally, some individuals find that ice water alleviates mild redness or irritation, leaving the skin feeling revitalized. However, it should be noted that this method is not a remedy for acne, breakouts, or more serious skin issues,” Dr. Suby Kakkar elaborated.
Is it risky to dunk your face in ice water?
The dermatologist emphasized that this skincare regimen may not be suitable for everyone. "Individuals with sensitive skin, rosacea, or extremely dry skin should exercise caution, as exposure to extreme cold can lead to irritation, redness, or dryness. Frequent use of ice water can deplete natural moisture, resulting in dry and flaky skin. Prolonged application of ice directly onto the skin may even harm the skin barrier," Dr. Suby Kakkar noted.
Here’s how to do it right:
For proper application, the doctor advised: "If you wish to experiment with this technique, it is preferable to use chilled water rather than direct ice to prevent shocking the skin. Limit your exposure to the water to 10-15 seconds at a time. Following this, it is essential to apply a high-quality moisturizer to maintain skin hydration and avert dryness."
