Steam inhalation is considered an effective way to combat chest congestion, common cold and other respiratory issues as it helps to clear the nasal passage. But did you know that steaming is also a fantastic way to improve your skin health? Taking steam can help remove dirt and impurities, boost collagen production, and leave your skin looking hydrated and glowing. Facial steaming opens up your pores, making it easier to cleanse deeply and get that soft, plump skin we all crave. It is a simple, soothing practice that offers both health and beauty benefits, making it a must-try in any self-care routine. But how to do facial steaming at home? Let's tell you all about it.

What are the benefits of facial steaming?

Here are 7 top benefits of face steaming you should know:

1. Helps in cleansing

Facial steaming helps in deep cleaning your skin. When you expose your face to steam, the warm moisture opens up your pores, making it easier to get rid of all the dirt, oil, and makeup residue from your face. “It leaves your skin feeling fresh and clean. This deep cleanse also helps to prevent clogged pores, which means reduced risk of breakouts and bright skin tone,” explains dermatologist Dr Rinky Kapoor.

2. Improves blood circulation

You know that healthy glow you get after a good workout? Facial steaming can give you a similar effect with no sweat! The warmth of the steam boosts blood circulation, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to your skin. This not only makes your skin look more bright but also improves the natural repair process of your skin.

3. Reduces the risk of acne

If you are prone to acne, facial steaming can be a game changer. When your pores are open and clean, there is less chance for bacteria to get trapped and cause breakouts. Plus, the steam helps to soften blackheads and whiteheads, making them easier to remove. Over time, regular steaming can give you smoother, clearer skin.

4. Hydrates your skin

Is your skin dry and flaky? Facial steaming is a must for you. The warm steam allows moisture to penetrate deeper into the skin layers. “While it is not a replacement for your moisturiser, steaming can enhance the hydration levels of your skin, leaving it feeling softer and more supple,” says Dr Rinky. This is especially great during the colder months when your skin tends to be drier.

5. Boosts collagen production

We all want that firm, youthful skin, right? Well, facial steaming might help you with this. By increasing blood circulation, steaming encourages collagen production. Collagen is the protein responsible for keeping your skin firm and elastic, so the more you have, the less likely you are to see fine lines and wrinkles, as per the study published by Nutrients. While steaming won’t reverse signs of ageing, it is a simple step that can support your natural skin anti-ageing process.

6. Helps remove blackheads

Blackheads are very annoying and just won’t leave. But with facial steaming, you can finally get rid of them! The steam helps to loosen the dirt and oil trapped in your pores, making it much easier to remove blackheads without damaging your skin. After steaming, use a blackhead removal tool, and you will notice a significant difference.

7. Makes your skin soft and plump

One of the immediate benefits you will notice after a facial steaming session is how soft and plump your skin feels. “The moisture from the steam not only hydrates but also makes your skin feel incredibly smooth to the touch,” according to Dr Rinky. This indicates that your skin is well-moisturised and healthy and can reduce the risk of dry skin.

Position the steamer on a flat surface near a comfortable chair where you can sit.

Step 3: Cover your hair with a towel to avoid it coming on your face during the process.

Step 6: Steam for 2-3 minutes at a time, followed by a 1-minute break. Make sure to close your eyes and avoid leaning in too close to prevent burns.

Step 6: Steam your face for about 5-10 minutes. This will help open your pores and soften the skin.

Avoid exfoliating your skin after steaming your face, as it may irritate your skin and can cause your pores to be inflamed, especially if you are prone to acne.

How often should you steam your face?

You need to be careful when you are doing facial steam because a steam burn is more damaging than a burn from boiling water. To reduce the risk, avoid putting your face too close to the steam and check the intensity with your hand before placing your face above the water bowl and steamer. Do not steam your face more than once or twice a week for best results and do it for at least 5-10 minutes. Steaming too often can lead to dryness or irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin. Also, always apply a moisturiser after taking the steam to lock in hydration and soothe your skin.
