Holi 2025: The vibrant festival of colors is approaching, and each year, it is celebrated with the joyous tradition of playing with colors and indulging in special festive treats. While Holi involves the use of gulal, water balloons, and water guns, it is crucial to implement safety precautions, as these items can potentially inflict significant harm to the ears.

In a discussion with Lifestyle, Dr. Anish Gupta, the lead consultant in ENT at CK Birla Hospital Gurugram, stated, “Although water balloons are a staple of summer fun and Holi festivities, they can lead to serious and sometimes irreversible ear damage. Being mindful of these dangers can help prevent injuries and protect hearing health.”

The hidden danger of water balloons:

Water balloons burst upon impact, generating a rapid release of pressure. According to the ENT specialist, if they are thrown with excessive force or too close to the ear, they can inflict significant injury.

Eardrum perforation: The eardrum is a delicate membrane located in the ear. A strong impact can lead to its rupture, resulting in pain, hearing impairment, and potential infection.

Middle ear injury: The middle ear contains small bones that play a crucial role in sound transmission. A water balloon's impact can fracture these bones, complicating the ability to hear.

Inner ear injury: The inner ear is responsible for both hearing and balance. A severe impact can damage this area, leading to lasting hearing loss and episodes of dizziness.

Barotrauma: A rapid change in air pressure within the ear can lead to discomfort, muffled hearing, or chronic issues.

Risk of waterborne infections:

Water balloons filled with contaminated water can introduce harmful bacteria and fungi into the ear, potentially leading to infections such as:

Otitis externa (commonly known as swimmer's ear): Contaminated water trapped in the ear canal creates an environment conducive to bacterial growth, resulting in inflammation, pain, and discharge.

Otitis media: When bacteria invade the middle ear through a ruptured eardrum, it causes an infection characterized by ear pain, fever, and fluid buildup.

Fungal ear infections: The presence of stagnant water in the ear can promote fungal growth, leading to persistent itching, discomfort, and disturbances in hearing.

Playing with water balloons can cause ear injury.

Warning signs of ear injury:

  • Ear pain or tenderness
  • Ringing (tinnitus)
  • Muffled hearing
  • Fluid or blood discharge
  • Dizziness or vertigo

Prevention tips for Holi celebrations:

  • Avoid throwing at the ears or head. Encourage targeting the limbs or torso.
  • Throw from a safe distance. Throwing closer equals more force.
  • Use lighter, softer-filled balloons. Filled to excess, balloons are heavier and strike harder.
  • Protect your ears. Those with a tendency for ear infections or previous injuries may want to use earplugs or headgear.
