Holi 2025: Holi is a vibrant celebration characterized by exuberance and festivity. This festival of colors generates considerable excitement as participants engage in playful color throwing; however, it can be a source of stress for pets. In addition to the bright hues and unfamiliar loud noises that may disturb dogs and cats, the Holi colors, particularly synthetic varieties containing harmful pigments, can jeopardize their skin health.

In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Deepak Saraswat, the chief veterinarian at Zigly, provided several recommendations for caring for pets exposed to colors. He emphasized the importance of avoiding synthetic colors entirely, as they can irritate pets and may be toxic if ingested.

Dr. Saraswat offered the following detailed cleaning suggestions to effectively remove Holi colors from your pet's fur:

Give your pet a thorough bath

The initial and crucial step is to give your pet a gentle bath to eliminate color stains. Utilize a pet-safe shampoo that is gentle on their sensitive skin and minimizes irritation. Lukewarm water is ideal for bathing, and it is essential to rinse thoroughly. If there are significant color residues, gently wipe your pet down with a damp cloth prior to bathing. Incorporating a small amount of baking soda into the water can assist in removing stubborn stains.

Clean their eyes and ears

Holi colors may infiltrate your pet’s eyes and ears, potentially causing harm and irritation. Use a damp cotton ball to carefully remove any residue around their eyes, avoiding human products. A mild ear cleaning solution is recommended for wiping the outer ear to eliminate any unwanted substances. Always exercise caution and gentleness to prevent discomfort or injury.

Trim and groom their fur

To address stubborn stains on their fur, you may opt for a trimmer or seek the services of a professional groomer. Holi powder can adhere to their coat, and utilizing a quality brush can assist in eliminating any residual powder. Furthermore, this is an opportune moment to examine for tangles, mats, or dirt embedded in their fur. Grooming not only eliminates color but also contributes to maintaining your pet's coat in a healthy and lustrous condition.

Cleanse their paws

Paws are often the initial area where color can quickly adhere during Holi celebrations. After bathing, carefully examine your pet’s paws for any lingering powder, particularly between the toes. If you detect any stains, gently wipe their paws with a damp cloth or employ a paw cleaner to eliminate any residue. This step is crucial, as pets tend to lick their paws, and excessive licking may signal an allergic reaction or irritation. Ensuring their paws are clean can help prevent them from ingesting harmful substances.

However, Dr. Saraswat advises that if the color causes noticeable irritation or is ingested, it is essential to consult a veterinarian promptly.
