High Blood Pressure and Liver Health: Recognize These Warning Signs

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can lead to various health issues. Its symptoms are quite noticeable, posing serious risks to the organs. In a chat with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Bhavesh Patel, a consultant gastroenterologist at Bhailal Amin General Hospital, mentioned that hypertension can also impact the liver and potentially result in liver fibrosis.

What exactly is liver fibrosis?

Liver fibrosis happens when the liver experiences ongoing damage, prompting a healing response that results in the buildup of scar tissue. If this condition isn't caught early, it can worsen and lead to cirrhosis, which affects liver function. Although hepatitis and alcohol use are well-known causes of liver issues, high blood pressure might also contribute to the damage, according to Dr. Bhavesh Patel.

How high blood pressure leads to liver fibrosis:

While the impact of high blood pressure on the liver is often overlooked, it can lead to serious consequences. Dr. Bhavesh Patel explained, “Hypertension increases vascular pressure, which can disrupt blood flow in the liver. High blood pressure can cause microvascular injuries, resulting in tiny tears or damage to blood vessels that trigger inflammation. This process activates stellate cells, which are key players in fibrosis. Once these cells are activated, they begin to produce collagen and other matrix materials, replacing healthy liver tissue with fibrous scar tissue.”

The doctor explained that insulin resistance, obesity, and dyslipidemia play a role in the onset of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). If left unchecked, this condition can progress to Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) and eventually lead to liver fibrosis.

Signs to keep an eye on:

The gastroenterologist pointed out that liver fibrosis often doesn't show any symptoms in the beginning until there's been considerable damage. Still, there are some subtle signs to watch for, such as fatigue, weakness, tiredness, discomfort in the abdomen, a sensation of fullness in the upper right side of the belly, swelling, jaundice, and easy bruising.

Prevention tips to keep in mind:

  •  Eating a balanced diet
  • -Staying active with regular workouts
  •  Keeping your weight in check
  •  Cutting back on alcohol
  • Scheduling routine checkups and screenings
