Hidden Risks: How Asthma and Depression May Contribute to Kidney Failure

3 months ago | 5 Views

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society sought to explore the connection between kidney failure and various health conditions, including asthma and depression. The findings revealed that older adults suffering from multiple chronic conditions experience a notably accelerated decline in kidney function compared to their counterparts with fewer health issues.

What the study found

The researchers indicated that the presence of multiple chronic health conditions, such as asthma or depression, seems to hasten the deterioration of kidney health. They noted that not all chronic conditions have the same effect on kidney function, and certain combinations of health issues can lead to a more rapid decline. Specifically, cardiometabolic conditions—those associated with heart and metabolic health—were identified as posing the highest risk.

“Our findings underscore the necessity of a thorough evaluation that takes into account not only the total burden of chronic diseases but also the intricate interactions between these diseases when assessing the risk of kidney function decline in older adults. Individuals exhibiting diseases typical of high-risk multimorbidity patterns may particularly benefit from enhanced monitoring of kidney function, encouragement of healthy lifestyle choices, and timely pharmacological interventions,” stated Giorgi Beridze, one of the study's authors.

More about the study

The research followed nearly 3,100 older adults over a span of 15 years to investigate how various combinations of health conditions influence kidney health. The average age of participants was approximately 74 years, with two-thirds being women. The researchers gathered comprehensive medical data through physical examinations, medical histories, and diverse health records. Participants received regular check-ups, during which kidney function was assessed through blood tests estimating the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

A significant 87 percent of participants in the study were found to have multiple chronic conditions, underscoring the prevalence of complex health issues among the elderly population. The research revealed five distinct patterns of chronic conditions present among the participants. The most alarming group was identified as having cardiometabolic conditions, including diabetes and heart-related ailments. This group exhibited the most severe decline in kidney function, with their kidney filtration rates decreasing nearly three and a half times more rapidly than those in the lowest-risk category.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the airways, characterized by variable limitations in expiratory airflow and a range of respiratory symptoms. It continues to be a significant global health issue. Symptoms associated with asthma include coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, and shortness of breath. According to the medical journal Frontiers, asthma can be triggered by various environmental factors, including allergens, pollution, infections, changes in weather, and emotional stressors.
