Heatwaves and Heart-Lung Health: Expert Advice to Protect Yourself During Extreme Heat

As summer approaches, the threat of heatwaves is becoming a concern in some regions of the country. Although our bodies are quite resilient and can adapt to changing temperatures, extreme heat and heatwaves can seriously impact our health.

In a chat with a Lifestyle Magazine, Dr. Shraddha Gandhi, an emergency department consultant at Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai, mentioned, “Heatwaves can greatly affect the heart and lungs, especially when temperatures exceed 103-104°F. At this point, the body's ability to regulate its temperature is compromised.”

Dr. Shraddha Gandhi elaborated on the effects of heatwaves on the heart and lungs.

Impact of heatwaves on heart health:

  • Heat stroke can drop blood pressure, which might result in insufficient blood flow to essential organs.
  • The strain on the heart can lead to conditions like atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and ventricular fibrillation.
  • Reduced blood circulation can harm the heart muscle, and experiencing multiple heat strokes can cause scarring in the heart.
  • There’s a heightened risk of cardiovascular issues: Suffering from heat stroke raises the likelihood of developing heart-related problems, including heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure.
  • Here's how heatwaves can affect health.

Impact of heatwaves on lung health:

The doctor mentioned that heatwaves can significantly impact individuals who already have respiratory issues. "High temperatures can worsen asthma symptoms and trigger attacks, particularly in those with poorly managed asthma. Additionally, heat stress can intensify symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing in COPD patients. Cystic fibrosis patients may also experience related respiratory symptoms during heatwaves," she explained.

  • Increased breathing rate: When trying to cool off, a person might breathe more rapidly, which can be worsened if they already have a respiratory issue, such as asthma or COPD.
  • Bronchospasm: Exposure to high temperatures can lead to airway tightening, known as bronchospasm, making it harder to breathe.
  • Inflammation: Heat waves can lead to lung inflammation, potentially resulting in acute respiratory distress syndrome.
  • Pneumonia: Suffering from heat stroke raises the risk of pneumonia, especially among at-risk groups like the elderly.

Safety precautions to keep yourself protected:

  • Stay hydrated to help thin mucus and keep your airways moist.
  • Try to avoid intense activities during the hottest parts of the day to reduce stress on your lungs and heart.
  • If you have any pre-existing respiratory conditions, monitor your symptoms closely and seek medical help immediately if they get worse. It's crucial to get prompt care if you notice signs of heat stroke.
  • Take quick action to cool your body down, such as using ice packs, receiving cold IV saline at the hospital, and wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
