Summer has arrived, bringing with it increased humidity that can impact skin health. If not properly managed, the sweat that builds up can lead to the development of acne. In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Noopur Jain, chief consultant dermatologist and founder of Skinzest, explained, “When sweat from the skin combines with sebum, dirt, and bacteria, it can clog pores and result in acne.”

The dermatologist also provided several skincare recommendations to help prevent acne and skin breakouts.

Face cleansing is essential:

Gentle facial cleansing is essential; however, it is important to avoid excessive cleansing, as this can remove the skin's natural oils. Over-washing may lead to breakouts. For effective cleansing, opt for a mild, sulfate-free cleanser and follow a twice-daily routine, both in the morning and evening. If you experience significant sweating throughout the day, simply rinse your face with water and gently pat it dry, rather than scrubbing vigorously. Individuals with acne-prone skin may benefit from cleansers that contain salicylic acid and tea tree oil.

Moisturizer is a must:

Moisturizing oily and sweaty skin may appear illogical; however, neglecting this step can lead to increased oil production. Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that contains ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or aloe vera to maintain hydration without obstructing pores.

Be mindful while picking sunscreen:

Sunscreen is crucial for skin protection; however, oily formulations may lead to breakouts. Opt for an oil-free, gel-based, or mattifying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater. Components such as zinc oxide and niacinamide not only shield your skin from UV damage but also assist in preventing acne.

Opt for oil-free, gel-based sunscreen.

Try to keep sweat at bay:

Following perspiration, it is important not to allow sweat to linger on your skin for an extended period. Utilize a clean towel or blotting paper to softly dry your skin. It is advisable to change out of damp clothing promptly, particularly after workouts, to reduce the risk of body acne. If you are susceptible to breakouts, take a shower right after exercising and apply an antibacterial body wash.

Refraining from heavy and rich makeup products:

Excessive perspiration and thick makeup are not a compatible combination. For those requiring coverage, opt for non-comedogenic and breathable options such as mineral-based powders or BB creams. It is essential to remove makeup before sleeping to avoid the risk of clogged pores.

Limited exfoliation with mild agents:

Accumulation of sweat and dead skin cells can result in clogged pores. To maintain clear pores, it is advisable to use a gentle exfoliant 2-3 times weekly. Components such as salicylic acid and lactic acid effectively eliminate buildup while minimizing skin irritation.
