Hate Math? This One Easy Calculation Could Save Your Health

The significance of daily step counts is widely recognized, with specialized smartwatches designed to monitor the achievement of 10,000 steps. Meeting this daily step goal is crucial for maintaining an active lifestyle. However, research conducted by Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine indicates that incorporating heart rate data into daily step tracking enhances the ability to monitor fitness levels and assess heart health. The researchers introduced a metric known as 'Daily Heart Rate Per Step' (DHRPS).
What is DHRPS?
DHRPS is determined by dividing an individual's daily resting heart rate by their average number of steps taken. This ratio is vital for comprehending heart function, as step counts alone do not provide a complete picture of health risks. Furthermore, the study suggests that a higher DHRPS ratio may indicate increased health risks.
The research analyzed data from 7,000 smartwatch users, correlating their DHRPS values with their electronic medical records. The results revealed that individuals with elevated DHRPS ratios were more prone to conditions such as Type II diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, and stroke.
Moreover, the study concluded that DHRPS serves as a more accurate and reliable measure of disease risk compared to evaluating step counts or resting heart rates in isolation.
What does DHRPS mean?

The principle behind DHRPS is quite straightforward. If one person's heart beats significantly more times than another's while both take the same number of steps, it may indicate inefficiency. For example, consider two individuals who each walk 10,000 steps daily; one has a resting heart rate of 80 beats per minute (bpm), while the other has a resting heart rate of 120 bpm. The DHRPS for the first individual is 0.008, whereas the second individual's DHRPS is 0.012. The higher ratio suggests an increased risk of heart disease.
This method is particularly advantageous as it requires only a simple calculation using a smartwatch.
