Hair Breakage to Hair Growth: Effective Treatments That Truly Work
8 days ago | 5 Views
When addressing the topic of hair growth and treatments, it is crucial to distinguish between genuine hair loss and transient hair shedding. Understanding the underlying cause is vital for selecting the most appropriate treatment.
In a conversation with Lifestyle, Dr Kashish Kalra, MBBS, MD, a Dermatologist, Hair Transplant Surgeon, Head of Department at Max Hospital, and Founder of Dr Kalra Skin Clinic, explained that hair loss treatments can be classified into three primary categories:
1. Medications for hair loss treatment
Numerous medications have been clinically validated for their effectiveness in addressing hair loss. The most frequently utilized options include:
Minoxidil – A topical formulation that activates hair follicles and encourages hair regrowth.
Finasteride – An oral treatment that aids in preventing hair loss by inhibiting DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a hormone associated with hair thinning.
Peptide-based Treatments – Peptides like Capixyl and Redensyl, which are derived from plant sources, are emerging as promising alternatives for managing hair loss. Although research on these compounds is still in progress, they have demonstrated favourable outcomes in diminishing acute hair loss and fortifying hair strands.

2. Regenerative procedures for hair growth
Regenerative therapies are designed to promote natural hair growth by enhancing the health of hair follicles and improving scalp conditions. The following treatments are included:
Mesotherapy – This technique entails the injection of a blend of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids into the scalp, utilizing microneedling or fine needles. It enhances the nourishment of hair follicles and increases hair density.
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) – This procedure involves extracting platelets from the patient's blood, concentrating them, and subsequently injecting them into the scalp. PRP encourages the regeneration of hair follicles, resulting in an estimated 20-30% increase in hair density. However, multiple sessions are necessary to achieve visible outcomes.
GFC (Growth Factor Concentrate) – Similar to PRP, GFC is a treatment derived from platelets that promotes hair growth by stimulating follicular activity. It operates on the same principles as PRP but may yield a more potent effect.
AMT (Autologous Micrografting Technique) – This method consists of extracting stem cells and growth factors from the patient's hair follicles, typically from the back of the scalp, and reinjecting them into areas of thinning hair. Unlike PRP or GFC, AMT generally requires only one session to achieve noticeable results.
Exosome Therapy – This advanced treatment involves the injection of DNA-derived exosomes via microneedling. These exosomes assist in regulating the hair growth cycle, fostering healthier and stronger hair. Similar to PRP and GFC, several sessions may be needed for optimal outcomes.

3. Surgical options for hair restoration
For those facing significant hair loss, particularly when non-surgical treatments have proven ineffective, a hair transplant emerges as the most dependable solution. This procedure entails relocating hair follicles from a donor site, usually located at the back of the scalp, to areas that are bald or experiencing thinning.
When hair transplantation is not a viable option, alternative cosmetic solutions such as hair patches or scalp micro pigmentation can serve as effective camouflage methods.
