Cervical cancer is characterized by the abnormal proliferation of cells in the cervix, primarily resulting from a persistent infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV). While cervical cancer is predominantly associated with women, it is important to recognize that HPV can also lead to significant health complications in men. In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Deepika Aggarwal, the director of obstetrics and gynaecology at CK Birla Hospital in Gurugram, stated, “Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has a well-established connection to cervical cancer in women; however, it is also implicated in various cancers affecting men, including anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. Although HPV is transmitted through sexual contact, the emphasis has primarily been on safeguarding women, yet it is crucial to consider its effects on the male population as well.”

Vaccination for men against HPV:

Dr. Deepika Aggarwal highlighted the significance of HPV vaccination for men as a means of safeguarding against anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. She stated, "Vaccinating boys against HPV represents one of the most effective preventive strategies against these types of cancer. Research has demonstrated that HPV vaccination can avert the viral strains linked to these cancers in males." The gynaecologist also outlined the rationale for the vaccination.

Prevention of several cancers: Vaccination protects boys from penile and anal cancers, as well as oropharyngeal cancers caused by HPV.

Protection in females: Vaccinating boys also protects women, as the vaccine reduces overall transmission of HPV in the population. 

Optimal timing: The vaccine is most effective when administered before sexual activity. The recommended age for vaccination is between 9 and 14 years.

The vaccination of boys against HPV represents a crucial advancement in the prevention of cancer among males. Additionally, it plays a vital role in curbing the transmission of the virus between genders. With the availability of these vaccines in India, it is imperative to incorporate vaccination for boys into comprehensive cancer prevention strategies, as emphasized by Dr. Deepika Aggarwal.
