Beauty influencer Zareefa, the founder of Ammu Beauty Brand, recently posted a video on Instagram stating, “6 months of drinking okra water.” The infusion of okra (also known as ladies' finger) into water, which allows the release of mucilages, fiber, and other beneficial compounds, has become increasingly popular for its potential advantages in promoting gut health. Dr. Karan Rajan, a surgeon based in the UK, shared Zareefa's video to elucidate the mechanism by which 'okra slime contributes to gut health.'

In the video, Zareefa remarked, “I have been consuming okra water for six months, and here is how it has profoundly transformed my life.” She highlighted the first notable change, stating, “My bloating has significantly decreased because when okra is soaked in water, it releases both soluble and insoluble fiber, which aids in reducing bloating and enhancing digestion overall.”
Furthermore, she noted, “My skin has become much brighter, smoother, and shinier. The antioxidants present in okra water have greatly improved my skin texture... However, the advantages of mucilage extend beyond this. It also serves as a prebiotic feast for your microbiome, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria. He noted, “Moreover, the gel-like consistency also binds to cholesterol in the gut, aiding in the reduction of LDL cholesterol levels. It provides mucilage along with essential micronutrients and insoluble fiber.”
