Gut Feeling: How Probiotics Might Help Lift Your Mood, Says Study
12 days ago | 5 Views
Probiotics, often referred to as beneficial bacteria, have gained a strong reputation as essential allies for maintaining gut health, akin to a trusted friend for late-night conversations. These beneficial microorganisms aid in digestion and enhance the gut microbiome. An increasing number of individuals are adding probiotics to their daily routines through sources such as yogurt, fermented foods like kimchi, and dietary supplements.
Additionally, research indicates that probiotics may also have a positive impact on mental well-being. A study featured in the journal NPJ Mental Health Research revealed that probiotics can help reduce negative emotions.
How probiotics help people feel better

The researchers conducted a study involving healthy young adults who consumed probiotic supplements daily for a month, which included strains such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, commonly found in foods like yogurt, cheese, and sauerkraut.
Throughout the study, the researchers monitored the participants' moods on a daily basis, asking them to record their feelings each day.
After two weeks of probiotic intake, participants reported a decrease in negative emotions. In contrast, a control group that received placebo tablets, which they believed to be probiotics, did not experience any noticeable changes. This indicates the positive impact of beneficial bacteria on mood.
The study highlighted that while probiotics can alleviate negative feelings, antidepressants typically reduce both negative and positive emotions. The researchers cautioned that probiotics should not be seen as a substitute for antidepressants, particularly for individuals with severe mental health issues.
Who benefits most from probiotics?
The researchers found that individuals who are generally risk-averse tend to experience greater mood improvements from probiotics. These individuals are often more cautious and may experience anxiety regarding potential outcomes. Probiotics were effective in alleviating feelings of stress and anxiety in this group.
Additionally, the study revealed that probiotics enhance emotional processing, as participants demonstrated improved skills in interpreting facial expressions. This suggests that probiotics may enhance emotional awareness, allowing individuals to better recognize social cues.
The researchers acknowledged that while further investigation is needed to fully understand the relationship between probiotics and brain function, the results present promising avenues for developing gentler treatment options.
