Glow Drips for Skin Lightening and Anti-Ageing: What Dermatologists Say About Their Safety
11 days ago | 5 Views
More and more people are turning to intravenous (IV) infusions for skin glow and lightening. The main reason for using the key ingredients in these IV drips—glutathione and vitamin C—is their strong antioxidant properties, which help combat the stressors that contribute to aging.
IV glutathione: The age-defying miracle that’s got everyone buzzing
In a chat with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Gulhima Arora, a Senior Consultant Dermatologist at Mehektagul Dermaclinic in New Delhi, shared, “Long-term exposure to UV rays, radiation, smoking, pollution, and even normal bodily functions can lead to the release of reactive oxygen species. This accelerates aging by causing inflammation and breaking down collagen. However, these effects can be mitigated with the right ingredients found in IV infusions.”
She also pointed out, “One of the key benefits of IV infusions is that the medications go straight into the bloodstream, avoiding the absorption issues that can come with taking pills. Oral medications might not be absorbed effectively in the gut, which can lead to less than ideal results.”
Dr. Gulhima Arora highlighted that IV infusions also contain vitamins like B12, electrolytes, and the solution they’re mixed in, which can be saline or dextrose. She mentioned, “These components provide a ‘wellness boost’ that goes beyond just anti-aging. They help with hydration, enhance your glow, speed up metabolism, boost energy levels, and reduce mental stress thanks to the overall feel-good effect.”
The downside: Essential information to consider before trying IV skin brightening infusions
The expert mentioned that the treatment was originally pursued to help with the side effects of chemotherapy for cancer patients and those with Parkinson’s disease. However, there’s a lack of scientific research on its effectiveness for anti-aging or its safety for use beyond 12 weeks.
Dr. Gulhima Arora highlighted the importance of being cautious. She pointed out that administering treatments outside of a facility equipped with proper resuscitation and monitoring can be risky. In fact, IV glutathione infusions are prohibited in some countries because they can lead to serious drug reactions and sudden heart issues, like irregular heartbeats or coronary artery disease. It's crucial to have a healthcare professional monitor the process during the infusion. Additionally, it's important to weigh the costs against the benefits, as these treatments can be quite pricey.
