From Relief to Regret: 3 Drinks That Fuel Heartburn

Heartburn is characterized by a burning sensation in the chest, primarily caused by the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, a condition known as acid reflux. Individuals may also experience a sour taste in the mouth or a sensation of something being lodged at the back of the throat. This condition often occurs alongside symptoms such as indigestion, bloating, and excessive eating, leading to significant discomfort. Consequently, many individuals seek remedies for relief.

However, in their haste to alleviate the burning sensation, some may turn to beverages that could exacerbate the issue. There exists a common misconception regarding certain popular drinks, which Dr. Saurabh Sethi has addressed.

As noted in his professional background, Dr. Sethi is a gastroenterologist who has identified several beverages that should be avoided during episodes of heartburn.

Here are some drinks to avoid:

Lemon water

Many individuals quickly opt for lemon water as a remedy for heartburn, viewing it as a beneficial homemade solution for various health issues. However, Dr. Sethi cautioned that this drink can worsen the condition due to its acidic properties.

Sodas (both regular and diet)

It is a widespread practice to pair meals with soda, often believed to enhance flavor and aid digestion. The popular combination of pizza and soda exemplifies this trend. Nevertheless, Dr. Sethi clarified that the carbon dioxide in soda increases stomach pressure, which can lead to a greater likelihood of stomach acid refluxing into the throat, thereby intensifying acid reflux symptoms.

Apple cider vinegar

Dr. Sethi also advised against the widely circulated claims regarding the benefits of apple cider vinegar, often promoted by influencers. He emphasized that, like lemon water, apple cider vinegar is acidic and can contribute to heartburn rather than alleviate it.

Home remedies of this nature may appear to be convenient and straightforward solutions during a heartburn episode; however, they are not always effective and may occasionally exacerbate the discomfort. It is advisable to choose non-acidic beverages such as herbal teas or plain water, as these can provide relief to the stomach without intensifying acid reflux. It is essential to consume drinks that are gentle on the stomach during such episodes.
