In theory, the process of conceiving a child appears straightforward: one finds a partner and becomes pregnant. However, for many individuals, particularly those facing fertility issues, this journey can be significantly more complex. If natural conception does not occur after extensive attempts, a healthcare provider may suggest in vitro fertilization (IVF). Navigating decisions regarding reproductive health can be overwhelming and perplexing, prompting us to consult several experts about essential information regarding IVF success for those attempting to conceive.

In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Rakhi Goyal, an IVF specialist at Birla Fertility and IVF in Chandigarh, emphasized the importance of recognizing that the success of an IVF cycle is influenced not only by the procedure itself but also by the reproductive health of the couple. She stated, “It is vital for individuals to comprehend how lifestyle choices affect fertility, and as fertility specialists, we consistently inform patients that even minor adjustments in lifestyle can significantly enhance fertility and improve the likelihood of IVF success.”

So, what exactly is IVF? It is a fertility treatment that entails the fertilization of eggs with sperm in a controlled laboratory environment, followed by the transfer of the fertilized egg back into the uterus.

What pre-conception lifestyle changes to make?

Dr. Rakhi Goyal recommended several straightforward lifestyle adjustments to enhance the chances of IVF success, including regular exercise and a balanced diet. She noted, “Engaging in regular physical activity contributes to overall health and helps prevent obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Maintaining a healthy body mass index (BMI) supports normal ovulation, improves semen quality, increases the likelihood of conception, and reduces the risk of miscarriages or complications during pregnancy.”

It is essential to uphold a balanced diet, as emphasized by her. She stated, "Incorporating nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acids while limiting processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats can enhance fertility. It is advisable to avoid excessive consumption of caffeine and alcohol, as well as smoking, since these factors can diminish the likelihood of conception and elevate the risk of miscarriages. Adequate sleep, ideally between 7 to 8 hours, is also crucial for the success of IVF."

Developing a positive attitude, spending time with things and people that make you happy, meditating and practicing yoga daily can greatly relieve stress and enhance one's well-being. (Representative picture: Freepik)

Stress management and emotional well-being

Furthermore, managing stress and minimizing exposure to environmental toxins from food, air, water, and household products is vital. Dr. Rakhi Goyal noted, "Particularly, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as pesticides, certain cosmetics, and food packaging can adversely affect fertility and should be avoided regularly. The hormones released during stress can negatively influence conception; therefore, couples may benefit from engaging in yoga or other relaxation techniques to enhance fertility."

Dr. Kalpana Jain, an IVF specialist at Birla Fertility and IVF, added, "A harmonious relationship between the body, mind, and spirit is essential for optimal health. Cultivating a positive mindset, spending time with joyful activities and individuals, meditating, and practicing yoga daily can significantly alleviate stress and improve overall well-being."

She recommended moderate exercise 2 to 3 times a week, a balanced diet rich in proteins and antioxidants, increased sun exposure with appropriate protection, drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water daily, and maintaining regular meal times. She remarked, "These straightforward yet impactful lifestyle modifications can greatly enhance the chances of conception and the success of IVF treatments."

It is important to note that while these lifestyle adjustments can improve the likelihood of successful IVF, they should not substitute for medical treatment. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before implementing any significant changes.
