Genetics and lifestyle significantly contribute to the development of blood cancers, including Leukaemia, Lymphoma, and Myeloma. Additionally, environmental toxins represent a third factor that can trigger these malignancies. In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Shivali Ahlawat, an oncologist at Oncquest Laboratories, stated, “Environmental toxins play a role in causing mutations and disrupting the body's hematopoietic system. This category encompasses substances such as benzene, pesticides, heavy metals (including arsenic and lead), and various industrial pollutants. Prolonged exposure to these toxins can compromise the immune system and induce DNA mutations, potentially resulting in cancerous transformations in blood cells.”

Dr. Ahlawat elaborated on the impact of environmental toxins on blood cancer.

Benzene and blood cancer:

“Benzene, a significant carcinogen found in cigarette smoke, vehicle emissions, and industrial solvents, is particularly concerning. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), long-term exposure to benzene heightens the risk of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) due to its damaging effects on hematopoietic cells within the bone marrow. Furthermore, it can hinder the production of blood cells,” Dr. Shivali Ahlawat explained.

Pesticides and blood cancer:

Pesticides can cause blood cancer.

Certain agricultural pesticides have been associated with an increased risk of developing Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and other hematological malignancies. It is thought that these substances disrupt normal cellular signaling pathways and induce oxidative stress, resulting in genetic mutations, as noted by the oncologist.

Heavy metals and radiation:

“Moreover, various heavy metals, such as arsenic, along with prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation from industrial activities or medical imaging, have been linked to the onset of various blood cancers. These factors hinder normal cellular repair mechanisms and contribute to genomic instability,” the physician elaborated.

How to prevent ourselves from environmental toxins?

In response to this question, Dr. Shivali Ahlawat emphasized the importance of utilizing protective equipment in high-risk occupations and minimizing exposure to known carcinogens. “Regular screenings offered by specialized cancer testing laboratories enable the early detection of blood abnormalities, which enhances treatment outcomes,” she stated.
