Have you been experiencing a sense of weakness recently but are unable to identify the cause? It is possible that you may be suffering from a prevalent condition known as anaemia.
Anaemia is characterized by a reduced count of red blood cells, which is often indicated by low levels of haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is the essential protein found in red blood cells that facilitates the transport of oxygen throughout the body.
In a discussion with Dr. Mahadeva Swamy, a Hematologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Physician at Manipal Hospital in Goa, he noted, “Common symptoms include fatigue and shortness of breath. Approximately 10% of the adult population is affected by anaemia, with women being particularly vulnerable due to blood loss during menstruation and the increased blood requirements during pregnancy. Additionally, older adults are at a heightened risk, primarily due to chronic health issues such as kidney disease."
Let us explore this condition further:
Types of anaemia
Anaemia is categorised into three broad groups:
- Blood loss-related anaemia
- Anaemia due to decreased or faulty red blood cell production
- Anaemia caused by red blood cell destruction

Could a simple blood test save your life?
Dr. Mahadeva Swamy stated that a Complete Blood Count (CBC) serves as the initial diagnostic test; however, additional assessments such as blood smear analysis, reticulocyte count, and bone marrow biopsy may be necessary.
He further explained that the treatment approach is contingent upon the specific type of anaemia present. Dr. Mahadeva Swamy noted that iron-deficiency anaemia is addressed through iron supplementation, whereas anaemias resulting from vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies require appropriate vitamin supplementation. In cases of aplastic anaemia and bone marrow failure syndromes, more aggressive treatment options may be warranted, including medications, blood transfusions, Anti-Thymocyte Globulin (ATG) therapy, or bone marrow transplantation.

He added, “Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia often requires immunosuppressant’s, while anaemia due to blood loss may necessitate surgical intervention to identify and stop the bleeding.”
