A recent study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology has indicated that Body Mass Index (BMI) is not a reliable metric for assessing health and fitness. Rujuta referenced this research in a video, noting that when individuals adhere to strict diets and exercise regimens without achieving weight loss, they often experience frustration and resort to extreme measures. This approach can be detrimental. To differentiate between fatness and fitness, Rujuta suggests considering three key factors:
Size:
Rujuta clarified that a reduction in body size is a clear sign of fat loss.
Shape:
She pointed out that monitoring changes in body shape, particularly around the waist, is crucial. This indicates a reduction in visceral fat, which is the fat stored between organs, and signifies healthy fat loss.
Capacity:
Our overall health and fitness are also reflected in our physical capacity. Improvements can be observed in our ability to take the stairs, engage in prolonged play with children without discomfort, or sustain longer workout sessions, all of which indicate enhanced capacity and contribute to healthy weight loss.
