Anant Ambani, the youngest son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani, garnered significant attention in 2016 due to his remarkable weight loss achievement, having lost 108 kg over a span of 18 months. His transformation was guided by fitness trainer Vinod Channa. In a blog post on his website dated January 2022, Vinod discussed the rising popularity of gluten-free diets, questioning whether this trend is merely a fad or a valid dietary option.

What is gluten, and how does it relate to weight management?

Vinod elaborated on various aspects, including the definition of gluten, the rationale behind gluten-free labeling, its role in weight loss diets, and whether a gluten-free diet is advisable for everyone.

He explained, “Gluten refers to the proteins present in wheat, rye, barley, and triticale. These proteins help maintain the structure of these foods, acting as a binding agent. Recently, many individuals have expressed concerns about gluten consumption, associating it with potential health issues. However, studies indicate that gluten is safe for the majority of people and can be consumed without negative effects. It may, however, pose challenges for individuals with specific health conditions, such as celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, wheat allergies, and other related disorders.”

He noted that common symptoms of celiac disease include digestive discomfort, damage to the small intestine, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, headaches, fatigue, skin rashes, depression, unexplained weight loss, and foul-smelling stools.

The gluten-free fad

In recent years, the gluten-free diet has gained popularity, with many individuals embracing it as a lifestyle choice rather than a necessity for health reasons. Vinod pointed out, “Why do most people confuse 'gluten-free' with a diet trend or a health fad? We have become accustomed to seeing labels like fat-free and cholesterol-free on products, leading us to believe they must be healthy. However, for those without celiac disease, the distinction is not particularly significant. It is essential to prioritize healthy food choices. A gluten-free label does not inherently indicate that a product is nutritious, and gluten-free processed foods remain processed. Individuals who suspect they have a gluten intolerance should consult a healthcare professional before making significant dietary changes.”

Vinod also provided a list of 'naturally gluten-free food items,' which includes rice, oats, quinoa, flax, millet, sorghum, tapioca, buckwheat, arrowroot, and amaranth. Additionally, he identified 'healthy whole foods that are naturally gluten-free,' such as meat, fish, seafood, eggs, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and healthy fats like oils and butter.
