Fitness Coach’s Guide: Best Exercises to Restart Your Workout After a Long Break

9 days ago | 5 Views

Jumping back into a workout routine after a long break can be tough. Your body might feel stiff, you may have lost some of your previous gains, and figuring out where to start can be overwhelming. It's important to kick things off with some basic stretches to help your body adjust before diving into more advanced exercises.

Fitness coach Vibha Mahajan tackled this issue and shared some essential stretches to consider when getting back into working out after a long hiatus. In a post from April 8, Vibha showcased a stretching routine.

Bending and straightening the neck:

Vibha showed a neck mobility routine where she tilted her head to each side and stretched it both down and up. This exercise is great for enhancing neck flexibility and movement.

Shoulder twist:

Start by stretching your arms out, then move them back as far as your body permits, and finally, bring them back to the front.

Shoulder raises:

Shoulder shrugs are all about lifting your shoulders up and then letting them drop back down, just like when you shrug.

Movements of the hands:

Extend your arms in front of you and clench your fist. Next, rotate your fist in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions several times. For flexing, spread your fingers apart, then bend them down and lift them back up.

Wrist motion:

Vibha pointed out that doing the infinity loop in your wrist mobility routine is great for strengthening your wrists, which can really help with pushups and planks. All you have to do is interlock your fingers and rotate your wrists in that infinity loop several times.

Spinal flexibility exercise:

Let's take it easy and roll our spine down gradually. Start by standing tall, then gently bend forward to reach for your feet, and slowly rise back up. After that, we can move on to some side bends, where we’ll stretch our spine to the sides.

Hip flexibility workout:

Start by standing on your mat, then bend one knee and move it in a circular motion. Do this 10-12 times for each knee.

Advantages of stretching:

A May 2023 article from Healthline states that stretching can boost flexibility, enhance blood circulation, lower stress levels, and improve overall body posture.
