Fitness Coach Warns Against Harmful Weight Loss Diets: ‘No Magic Pills or Shortcuts’

Luke Coutinho is a lifestyle and fitness coach who shares health tips on Instagram. On April 17, he posted a message urging, “Wake up, India,” where he highlighted some of the most harmful diets for weight loss. He pointed out that diets like the 'low salt and no salt diet', 'no fat diet', 'crash diet', and 'starvation diet' are particularly dangerous.
He explained that while crash diets might result in quick weight loss, they are often not sustainable. Additionally, drastically cutting calories can lead to a lack of essential nutrients, fatigue, and a slower metabolism. He also mentioned that starvation can result in malnutrition, which brings about fatigue, weakness, and a higher risk of illness.
Luke pointed out, “Diets that are low in salt, rely on diuretics without medical guidance, or use Ozempic and Mounjaro without making lifestyle and behavioral adjustments can lead to serious issues. These include problems like inflamed guts, muscle and bone density loss, and food-related mental health challenges. Other risky trends like low-carb, high creatine, minimal exercise, and low water intake (especially starting creatine without checking kidney function) are also concerning. Social media is full of fad diets that can cause significant health risks, from kidney, liver, and heart problems to hormonal imbalances, disrupted metabolism, cognitive issues, gut deficiencies, mood swings, and bone health concerns.”
He continued, “It’s important to respect individual differences. There are no quick fixes or miracle pills for weight loss. What truly works is having the right knowledge, understanding your unique body type, and maintaining consistency, discipline, and simplicity.” Luke also mentioned, “If you fail, just try again. Failing is part of building consistency and discipline. Focus on being informed rather than swayed by trends.”
In his post, he encouraged everyone to pursue sustainable lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise and managing stress. Luke emphasized, “Low salt should only be used under medical advice for specific conditions; using it as a trend to avoid water retention is risky. Many people of all ages are jeopardizing their health in pursuit of quick fixes. There’s a right way and a wrong way to live, love, and eat. Recently, we’ve seen a surge in patients suffering from the side effects of these harmful diets—ranging from kidney and liver failures to significant cortisol spikes, hormonal imbalances, bone density loss, severe mood swings, low energy, sleep disturbances, skin pigmentation issues, hair loss, decreased libido, and much more. Have you found success with lifestyle changes?”
