The vagina is a part of the reproductive system, alongside the uterus, ovaries, cervix, and fallopian tubes. It is a self-cleaning organ that helps maintain a distinctive odor influenced by pH levels and natural bacteria down there. This natural scent varies from person to person due to factors like different diets, hormonal changes, and hygiene habits. Usually, this scent is subtle and mild. However, sudden changes may lead to a fishy odor which indicates potential health issues like infections or hormonal shifts. If you have experienced it too, you might be interested in knowing how to deal with it. Well, you may follow these home remedies to get rid of fishy vaginal odor!

What causes a fishy vaginal odor?

A fishy smell in the vagina can result from various factors, which may include certain vaginal infections:

1. Bacterial vaginosis

It is the most common vaginal infection that causes a fishy odor. Bacterial vaginosis occurs when there is an imbalance in bacteria in the vagina, leading to an overgrowth of certain bacteria, such as Gardnerella vaginalis. This overgrowth disrupts the natural pH balance of the vagina, typically maintained by lactobacilli, leading to a noticeable fishy odor.

2. Yeast infections

Yeast infections, often caused by Candida species, can also lead to changes in vaginal odor. However, the smell associated with yeast infections is typically described as a sweet smell, similar to that of honey or cookies, rather than fishy. It is important to note that yeast infections do not usually cause a fishy odor unless there is a secondary infection or a mixed infection with bacteria.

3. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis can also cause changes in vaginal odor. These infections are typically associated with other symptoms, such as vaginal discharge, itching, and discomfort. The specific odor associated with these infections can vary and may not always be fishy but can be foul-smelling depending on the bacteria causing the infection.

Other causes of fishy vaginal odor

Apart from vaginal infections, here are some potential causes of stronger or abnormal vaginal odor:

  • Poor hygiene practices, such as not washing your vagina daily and leaving a tampon in too long, can create an environment for bacterial overgrowth, leading to an unpleasant odor.
  • Douching disrupts the natural balance of bacteria and pH in the vagina. This can lead to irritation, infections, and changes in odor.
  • Hormonal changes during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause can also alter vaginal pH and contribute to odor.
  • Additionally, a diet rich in garlic, onions, and spices can sometimes affect body odor, including vaginal odor.
  • Sweating, particularly in the groin area, can create a warm and moist environment that promotes bacterial growth, influencing vaginal odor.

7 home remedies to get rid of fishy vaginal odor

These are some effective home remedies that can help you get rid of fishy vaginal odor:

1. Cranberry juice

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can sometimes cause changes in vaginal odor. However, according to a 2017 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, participants with a history of UTI noticed a reduced risk of recurring UTI by 26 percent with regular consumption of cranberry juice. "Consume unsweetened cranberry juice to prevent and alleviate the symptoms of infection," says Dr Rekha Sukala, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist.

2. Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seeds are known for their antibacterial properties. Drinking fenugreek water daily can help cleanse the system and potentially reduce fishy vaginal odor. To prepare fenugreek water, soak a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water overnight. Drink this water on an empty stomach in the morning until you notice a change in vaginal odor. Fenugreek can also help regulate hormones, which might contribute to better vaginal health.

3. Tea tree oil

Vaginal infection is one of the most common causes of vaginal odor. Although tea tree oil has been the key remedy that can help treat vaginal issues. Thanks to the natural antibacterial and antifungal properties of this essential oil, it can cure the yeast infection strain Candida albicans, as per a 2003 study published by the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. Also, its antiseptic and antibiotic properties can fight against the fishy odor. To use it, add a few drops of tea tree oil to water and add half a quarter cup of Epsom salt, mix it well, and soak for 15 minutes.

4. Baking soda

Baking soda can help neutralise pH imbalances in the vagina, which can contribute to an unpleasant odor. "Adding about half a cup of baking soda to your bathwater and soaking for at least 20 minutes once or twice a week can help restore pH balance and reduce the fishy odor," suggests Dr Sukala. However, it is essential not to overuse baking soda, as it can disrupt the natural acidity of the vagina if used excessively.

5. Probiotics

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help restore and maintain the balance of vaginal flora. Eating probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt or applying plain yogurt directly to the vaginal area can introduce healthy bacteria and discourage the overgrowth of odor-causing organisms. “Yoghurt can be applied for 15-20 minutes and then rinsed off with water. Avoid applying it inside your vagina,” advises Dr Sukala.

6. Garlic

There is a misconception that putting garlic gloves, cottage cheese, or yogurt inside your vaginal canal can help you get rid of fishy vaginal odor. This is a myth! In any circumstance, you should not follow such advice, as this can be risky. However, incorporating raw garlic into your diet or using garlic capsules may help fight off bacteria and yeast contributing to the odor. Dr Sukala says, "Garlic possesses strong antibacterial and antifungal properties, which can help combat infections and reduce the risk of vaginal odor."

7. Apple cider vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar is acidic and can help restore the natural pH balance of the vagina. It also contains antibacterial and antiseptic properties that can help fight vaginal odor. "Add one cup of ACV to your bathwater and soak it for 20–30 minutes few times a week. This may help reduce odor by creating an environment where harmful bacteria find it difficult to thrive," explains Dr Sukala. It is important to dilute the vinegar properly to avoid irritation.
