Feeling Tired and Weak? It Might Be More Than Just Low Iron

Anaemia is characterized by a decrease in haemoglobin concentrations, with diagnostic thresholds set at below 12g/dL for women and below 13g/dL for men. It frequently indicates the presence of an underlying health issue rather than being an isolated disorder, and its prevalence among older adults in developed nations is approximately 17-20%.

Anaemia is more than just low iron:

In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Prashanth B, a Consultant in Hematology at KMC Hospital located at Dr. BR Ambedkar Circle in Mangalore, stated, “The majority of cases progress gradually and frequently remain asymptomatic; however, severe anemia may result in symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, and shortness of breath, exacerbating existing health issues like heart failure, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The initial diagnostic test for confirming anemia is a Complete Blood Count (CBC) with differential, followed by further investigations to determine the underlying cause.”

The findings of the study are consistent with the National Family Health Survey-4 (2015-16), which found 22.7% of males aged 15-49 had anaemia.

He stated, "In adults, the primary cause is often blood loss, which frequently arises from ulcers in the stomach or intestines, or from excessive menstrual bleeding, resulting in iron deficiency anemia. Additionally, malabsorption may lead to vitamin deficiency anemia. The management of these conditions generally includes iron and vitamin supplementation; however, further diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound, endoscopy, and CT scans are essential to uncover possible sources of blood loss."

What anaemia could mean for you:

Dr. Prashanth B notes that anaemia of chronic disease is a commonly observed variant, linked to persistent health conditions such as kidney failure, diabetes, heart failure, liver disorders, and chronic arthritis. He emphasizes that addressing the root cause of the underlying illness is crucial for the effective management of this type of anaemia. Furthermore, Dr. Prashanth B points out that in certain instances, anaemia may signal bone marrow failure syndromes, including myelodysplastic syndrome or aplastic anaemia, which are critical conditions necessitating immediate medical attention.

Health experts emphasise that anaemia can be controlled with proper dietary habits, including consuming iron-rich foods like green leafy vegetables, fruits, and fortified products. (Shutterstock)

He stated, "A significant concern in adults is the presence of underlying blood cancer, which requires evaluation by a specialist. Should anaemia fail to improve with nutritional supplementation over a period of 1-2 months, it is crucial to seek a consultation with a haematologist for further assessment."
